Prescott rides to 3rd (03/24/2009)
Local roundup
Jay County native Rodney Prescott may have used a home turf advantage, so to speak, for a strong finish in the Lane's End Stakes Saturday at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.
Prescott, who has been a professional jockey since the mid-1990s, finished third in the grade 2 stakes race aboard Proceed Bee.
Hold Me Back, ridden by Kent Desormeaux, ran himself into contention for the Kentucky Derby with a victory in the race on the synthetic surface at Turfway Park. Flying Private, a 24-1 shot, was second, followed by Prescott and Proceed Bee, which went off at 17-1.
Proceed Bee, trained by Terry Gestes and owned by Bill Stiritz, earned $47,000 for the finish.
Prescott had claimed victory aboard Proceed Bee in the $100,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes at Turfway on Feb. 28.
Prescott, a former wrestler at Jay County High School, has won more than 2,000 races in his career. For several years, he was among the nation's leaders in mounts taken and wins.
Shreve misses medal
Jay County High School senior Dexter Shreve came up just short during the weekend at the Hoosier State Relays Finals held at Purdue University.
Shreve finished and tied for both 14th in the long jump and 15th in the high jump Saturday, missing out as a repeat medalist in track action at West Lafayette.
He hit the 20-foot, 6-inch mark on his long jump and cleared a 6-foot bar on the high jump. His performace, however, came under his seeded projections of 20-foot, 8.5-inches on the long and 6-foot, 2-inch mark on the high.[[In-content Ad]]
