Raider grapplers defeat West Jay (03/07/06)

DUNKIRK — The West Jay Middle School wrestling team came up with three wins, but fell with a 39-15 loss to the Southern Wells Raiders Monday.

Drake Meska wasted little time in his victory, scoring a pin in the 100-pound match in 23 seconds. Chris Mooney (145) added a pin in 1-minute, 32 seconds, and Chris Penrod (95) won by a 7-2 decision.

Vormohr, Miller win

FORT WAYNE — Cori Vormohr and Sam Miller each scored victories and three swimmers qualified for state action as the Jay County Winter Swim Team competed in the Northeast Divisional Championship meet this weekend.

Vormohr, who earned berths in four events at the senior state meet at Crawfordsville, came up with wins in three events. She took the 15-18-year-old girls 50-yard freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke, and added a third-place effort in the 100 freestyle.

Miller was first in the 13-14-year-old boys 200 freestyle and third in the 200 backstroke.

Mary Hudson and Caitlin Mark also qualified for state action. Hudson took third in the 11-12-year-old girls 50 breaststroke, and Mark was third in the 10-and-younger girls 100 butterfly.

Also, Aaron Hudson was second in the 13-14-year-old boys 100 butterfly, Justin Klopp took third in the 15-18-year-old boys 100 butterfly, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley and Anne Vormohr placed third in the 10-and-younger girls 50 backstroke.

Bowlers come up big

Several Jay County bowlers put together big days as the Brown Bowl hosted the 2006 Junior Invitational Saturday.

The Brown Bowl team of Evan Eley, Chris Elmore, Jacob Coy, Coty Bragg and Justin Bragg finished in first place with a pin count of 4,237.

Adam Mescher of Portland finished as the runner-up in the singles event, falling in the championship match to Myles McCoy of Winchester. Eley was the high handicap qualifier with a score of 862.

Cody Scott and Bragg of Portland were second in the doubles competition, finishing behind Andrew Holling and McCoy of Winchester.[[In-content Ad]]
