MUNCIE — Their school-best 7-1 start can probably be summed up in one word: Team.

Friday night Tyler Rigby hit four 3-pointers and scored 18 points in his team’s one-point win over Mississinewa. He made just one field goal Saturday, finishing with six points.

But Randy Evans was there to take the baton. After scoring just five points Friday night the senior buried his first four 3-point tries and scored a career-high 24 points Saturday in Jay County’s 71-62 victory over the Muncie Southside Rebels.

“It means you’re hard to guard,” said JCHS coach Craig Teagle, noting the blessing of having two great outside shooters on the same squad. “They were good looks. They were looks in the offense. To have two on the same team like that really makes us hard to guard. And they haven’t been on together yet.”

The entirety of the Patriot squad was on in the first quarter against Southside (1-7).

After a miss on their first field-goal try, Jay County (7-1, 1-0 Olympic Athletic Conference) hit four consecutive 3-pointers. It finished the quarter with a 3-pointer by Evans, his fourth, and went 6-of-7 overall from long distance in the opening period for a 24-17 lead.

Evans finished with five 3-pointers for his game-high scoring total, and the Patriots shot 51 percent for the game.

“With teams like this you can use the lead,” said Evans, whose squad never trailed after his second 3-pointer gave it a 9-7 lead in early in the opening quarter. “They’re so quick and physical it’s tough to dig out of a hole. It was nice to get out to a lead.”

Jay County beat the Rebels for the first time in more than a decade despite injuries to Evans, Rigby and John Retter, who was a game-time decision. But Evans said those injuries, and plenty of bumps and bruises to other players from the win over Mississinewa, didn’t seem to have an effect.

“I’m surprised how well we really did play because we were so banged up,” he said. “John Retter played really well. We just played through it.

“It was very physical, something we’re not used to playing. But we handled it pretty well.”

Although Evans lit up Southside from downtown, he wasn’t perfect, finishing 8-of-12 overall. But Zac Green and Scott Bruggeman were.

Green quietly made every shot he tried, finishing 7-for-7 from the field and 1-of-1 from the line as he also posted a career high with 16 points.

Bruggeman, who hit the game-winning free throws Friday night, hit each of his three field-goal attempts and scored eight points. He also dished out 10 assists, five of which came in the opening period.

Rigby, Retter and Corey Comer each had six points. Retter grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.

“Last night’s win was pure effort,” said Teagle. “Tonight we had effort with execution. When you have effort with execution you’re really going to be hard to beat.”

While thrilled with the pair of road wins, Teagle said his team’s biggest challenge comes next. Already with a win over then unbeaten Class 2A No. 1 Centerville, Jay County will visit the Class 3A No. 7 Connersville Spartans (7-1) Friday night in a game which will likely determine the OAC champion. Connersville’s lone loss came against undefeated Class 3A No. 1 New Castle.

Southside got 19 points from Will Hamilton to lead the way. Najee Montgomery added 14 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double, and Carlos Echols scored 13 points.

The Rebels shot 41 percent, but stayed in the game thanks to their effort from the foul line — 11-of-13 in the first half and 20-of-24 for the game.

They were within five points with 1:48 to play, but their shot selection was erratic down the stretch and Jay County scored the next six points before Montgomery hit a hoop at the buzzer for the final margin.

“That’s pretty much indicative of the way we’ve been,” said Southside coach John Hamilton. “We’re 1-7 for a reason ...

“We don’t have an offense. They just don’t understand how to run an offense. They just flat out refuse to do it.

“We just continually don’t understand. Our mental approach to the game is just not very good.”

After a dismal second quarter Jay County made a run in the second half, but fell 41-33 to the Rebels.

The Patriots (6-2) trailed by just one after the first quarter, but got outscored 10-2 in the second. They fell behind 32-20 after three periods before a fourth-quarter rally fell short.

Lance Franklin was the top scorer for the Patriots with eight points. Rhett Retter and Aaron Daniels each added seven points.

Michael Hornback led Southside with 12 points. D.J. Buchanan, Michael Wynn and Whenstone Nash each had eight points.[[In-content Ad]]
