Rebels end Jay's season in sectional (05/28/03)
JCHS softball
PENDLETON — The Patriots had just one hit fewer than the Muncie Southside Rebels Tuesday, and committed the same amount of errors (one). Jenni Chittum, Renae Laux and Chelsea DeBoy took turns making outstanding inning-ending plays to keep them in the ball game.
But in the end, it was the free passes which came back to bite the Jay County softball team in a 5-2 loss to Muncie Southside in first-round sectional action at Pendleton Heights.
The Patriot pitching staff issued six walks in the contest, and three of those runners came around to score. In the other dugout Ashley Williams gave up just one free pass when she hit Ashleigh Myers with a pitch as she took the complete-game win.
“It was very nice,” said Muncie Southside coach Dan Wickliffe, who’s team has now gone 10-1 in its last 11 games. “I told Ashley she looked like she was throwing five miles per hour faster than she has all year. She had the adrenaline flowing.”
Jay County coach Harold Towell agreed after watching his team strike out six times against Williams.
“She threw a nice ball game,” he said. “You can’t take anything away from her. She’s not going to hurt herself with walks. She’s a good pitcher.”
Still, the Patriots had just as many chances to score as Muncie Southside, but couldn’t capitalize. They left six runners on base in the game — three in scoring position — compared to three for the Rebels.
Muncie Southside (14-12) took control of the contest with a big fifth inning which began with a walk by Alicia Jameson. Jameson moved to second on a passed ball, but Miranda Kipfer struck out for the first out of the inning.
However, Chanel Richardson followed with a single to right field, and an errant throw by Katie Alberson allowed Jameson to score. Richardson moved to second on the error, reached third on a ground out by Fallon Shively and scored on a wild pitch.
Williams followed by helping herself with a towering triple to right field. She scored on a single from Brooke Bailey to cap the three-run inning for a 4-0 Rebel lead.
Richardson’s single was part of an outstanding day in which she reached base each of the four times she came to the plate. She finished 2-for-2 with two runs and walked twice.
“She’s been a spark for us all year,” said Wickliffe. “We’ve scored in the first inning of every game lately. Once she gets on base, she can make some things happen.”
Jay County got on the board in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jenni Chittum led off with a single and stole second base. Myers brought her in two batters later with an RBI single to center field.
But, Muncie Southside bumped the lead back up to four runs when Amanda Koons led off the sixth inning with a walk and scored on a Sarah Smith ground out. Calah Redwine got on base for the Patriots in the sixth inning and scored on an RBI single from Felisha Parr for the final margin.
“We didn’t give up,” said Towell. “That was the good part of it.
“We played solid. Defensively we did some pretty good things.”
It was defense which kept Jay County in the game, with Chittum making a pair of running catches in center field for the final two outs of the third inning.
Laux took care of the sixth inning almost entirely by herself, diving to her right and flinging the ball back to first base to get Sarah Smith of the first out. Then she made an outstanding stab on an Jameson line drive, and doubles Huntzinger off third base.
DeBoy finished the seventh inning with another double play. She reached for a Shively line drive and beat Richardson back to first base to end the frame.
Myers took the loss, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings. She struck out two and walked four.
Ashley Cook allowed one run on one hit and two walks in two innings of relief.
Muncie Southside moves on to play the Muncie Central Bearcats in the semifinal round at Pendleton Heights Thursday at 5 p.m. Muncie Central advanced with a 4-2 win over the Richmond Red Devils in the opening sectional game Tuesday.
