In team wrestling it’s sometimes not whether you win or lose which makes a huge difference, but how you do it.
Jay County got back-to-back huge efforts from Matt Daniels and Robert Ralston — in losses — against two of the Muncie Southside Rebels’ best wrestlers Wednesday night. Patriots Bill Spahr, Tony McCowan and Rodney Cassel each scored pins, leading the team to its 42-26 victory.
“I’m really excited. One of the things we wanted to work on was getting more pins than we give up,” said JCHS coach James Myers, whose team allowed just two Southside pins. “There weren’t a lot of falls in the match, but we got the upper hand in the situation. We just wrestled great tonight, especially against their tough kids.”
The Rebels (1-1) brought three wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in the state and another in the top 20, but Daniels and Ralston made the night difficult for two of them.
Jay County held a slim 21-20 lead after Kurt Hess, ranked third in the state, scored a 19-4 technical fall over Zach Shipman. Southside had hopes of building a lead with No. 9 Justin Combs and No. 17 Casey Bradley up in the next two matches. Daniels and Ralston thought otherwise.
Daniels wrestled an outstanding first period against Combs, trailing just 2-1 after the opening two minutes. He got into trouble a couple of times in the final two periods, but stayed off his back allowing just a couple of takedowns as he fell 6-1.
Ralston and Bradley went at it in a spirited battle early, each scoring three quick points before the Rebel senior grabbed a 5-3 advantage at the end of the period. Bradley never gave the lead back, but never pulled away or came close to a pin in winning an 11-5 decision.
“It wasn’t as much not giving up a fall there as it was just wrestling,” said Myers. “I think both guys did that. Robert’s first and third period against Bradley were just excellent.
“They took it to those guys and I’m proud of them. That’s what we wanted to do all night was come out and be aggressive.”
Having hoped to be up by as many as 11 points, which would have kept the team result in doubt until the final match, Southside instead had just a 26-21 lead after Combs and Bradley walked off the mat. Eighth-ranked Bill Spahr needed just 1-minute, six seconds to swing the match back in Jay County’s favor with a pin over Jimmie King.
“That was definitely big momentum for them,” said Rebel coach Tony Abbott. “Even by losing those matches they gained momentum. I thought that (Combs and Bradley) probably should have wrestled a little bit better. They didn’t get done what we wanted them to do.
Abbott said the other key for his team was giving up big points. His team allowed the three pins and gave away two forfeits while earning just two pins of its own.
“When we get guys on their back we’ve got to pin them,” he said. “In two or three matches we lost we had our opponent on their back and we couldn’t finish it.”
In addition to the wins from Spahr and Hess and big matches by Daniels and Ralston, both coaches looked at the 130-pound tilt between Tony McCowan and Dane Johnson as a key to the final score.
The pair traded takedowns early in the opening period, but wrestled to a stalemate for more than the next minute. The match turned with just 15 seconds left in the opening period when Johnson got out of position and pulled himself into a takedown.
McCowan took advantage, adding a near fall to lead 6-3. He never looked back, pinning Johnson 51 seconds into the second period.
“That was a swing match, and I knew it,” said Myers. “We told them in the locker room, ‘One match could swing this meet.’ I think that did. I think that got some momentum for us.”
With the victory sealed, Cassel added a fourth pin for Jay County.
Despite giving up more than 50 points to Mike Libby, Cassel finished off the match with a fall in 1:21.
Other victories for Jay County were: Nathan Daniels (135) 13-4 major decision over Joshua Mains; Tom Smith (189) 11-6 decision over Mark Clement; and Seth Drumm (112) and Nathan Conatser (215) by forfeit.
Pins for Southside came from a pair of wrestlers ranked No. 10 in the state. Marcus Miller (119) beat Caleb Culy in 59 seconds, and James King (140) needed one minute to finish off David Jones.[[In-content Ad]]
