Chalk up another record for Cori Vormohr. That's three down, and likely several more still to go.

Vormohr took down Jay County's school record in the 500-yard freestyle Monday, leading the Patriots to a 196-113 victory over the visiting Adams Central Jets.

The sophomore was well out in front in the longest race of the night after just 50 yards, and lapped the entire field by the 375-yard mark. But there was still plenty of excitement as her teammates realized the record was within reach and cheered her on to the finish.

Vormohr powered her way to the wall to complete her 10th lap, finishing in 5-minutes, 44.65 seconds. She said she was trying to break the record, which was previously held at 5:45.26 by Taylor Fullenkamp.

"It feels good since they're Taylor's," said Vormohr of taking down yet another of her cousin's marks. "All the hard work has paid off."

In addition to the record-breaking effort, the Patriots are 3-0 as they try to end a stretch of three consecutive losing seasons.

"It's great," Vormohr added of the start. "Everyone has good attitudes and I think it's going to be a good year."

Vormohr is also the Jay County record holder in the 200 individual medley and 100 butterfly. She broke her own IM record earlier this season at the Norwell Invitational.

Normally an IM and butterfly competitor, Vormohr went with the distance events against Adams Central. In addition to her record-breaking win, she cruised to victory in the 200 freestyle in 2:05.97.

She was just three seconds short of the school record in that event.

"I thought maybe we might have a double record breaker tonight," said JCHS coach Bev Arnold, who said she believes Vormohr has more records yet to come. "I thought she was going out at a pretty good pace for the 200 free. She was just shy, but that's the first time she's ever done the 200 free in high school competition."

Jay County took control when Vormohr and Ashley Horn, who was also second in the 500 freestyle, finished one-two in the 200 freestyle and four other Patriots swept the top four spots in the 200-yard individual medley.

Briann Saxman, who took over the top spot in Vormohr's regular events, led the way as Jay County stacked the IM.

She was dominant throughout the race to win in 2:43.00, Maddie Fennig held off fellow sophomore Kelci Reed for second and classmate Ivy Simons reached the wall fourth to finish off the sweep.

The victory pushed Jay County's lead from just six points to 23, and the Patriots added one-two finishes in three of the next four events to pull away.

"That was a surprise," said Arnold of the IM effort. "When they started out with the medley relay and they defeated us as soundly as they did in that event, I thought we might be in trouble. The IM was a very nice surprise to take the top four spot there."

Saxman added a second victory in the 100 butterfly, defeating Adams Central's Jamie Steiner by two seconds in 1:14.39. Her winning times in the IM and butterfly were career bests.

Freshman Michelle Landfair picked up a two wins for the second straight meet, using another late surge to win the 50 freestyle. She and senior teammate Tina Gingrasso were in a near dead heat most of the way just ahead of Kristen Everett of the Jets, but Landfair pushed ahead in the final 10 yards to win in 28.41. Gingrasso was second with a time of 28.79.

Landfair finished the 100 freestyle in a career-best 1:03.15 to edge Gingrasso by less than one second again.

"I think she must just be a real competitor," said Arnold. "Because she is not going to give up, and even if she's hurting in those last few yards she's going to find that extra burst of energy and keep on going."

Vormohr, Saxman and Landfair were each part of both winning relays for Jay County. They teamed with Christa Castillo for first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:56.32, and joined Gingrasso to win the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 4:17.86.

Lauren Murrell dominated the 100 breaststroke in 1:22.45, winning by more than seven seconds over Kristen Everett of Adams Central. April Acker pulled out a close victory in diving, topping the Jets' Claire Lehman by less than two points at 141.65.

Fennig's time of 2:57.35 was a career-best, and freshman Caitlin Ruchgy also posted a career-best in the 200 freestyle at 2:40.37.[[In-content Ad]]
