Jay County Summer Swim Team
South Adams squeaked by to win the conference title Saturday. But Jay County was the team breaking all the records.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team snapped 11 Wabash Valley Conference records at Saturday's meet at Portland Pool. It finished 12 points behind South Adams (2,375-2,363) with Wells Community third with 1,902.
The team also held its awards ceremony Sunday with Carli Ostrowski, Cori Vormohr and Hayley Confer taking home top honors.
More than half of the records came from the 9-10-year-old division led by Sophie Bader and Anne Vormohr. They each broke two individual records, with Bader setting conference, pool and team records in the long freestyle (32.76 seconds) and butterfly (16.6) and Vormohr breaking marks in the backstroke (17.27) and individual medley (1-minute, 22.22 seconds).
Vormohr and Bader, who are cousins, also won the breaststroke and short freestyle respectively. They teamed with Ashley Mark and Cori Stone to set conference, pool and team records in the 100-yard medley relay in 1:13.85 and 100 freestyle in 1:05.62.
Sam Miller also set records in two individual events, posting times of 2:19.24 in the 15-and-older individual medley and 25.47 in the short freestyle. He added a third win in the butterfly.
Cori Vormohr finished the 15-and-older girls breaststroke in a record time of 1:19.1. She picked up victories in the individual medley and butterfly as well.
Conference records also went to Alex Bader in the 8-and-younger butterfly (18.83) and Carley Stone in the 8-and-younger short freestyle (17.74). Alex Bader also too first in the individual medley and breaststroke while Stone won the long freestyle and backstroke.
Jay County also swept the 13-14-year-old girls events with Mary Hudson taking the top spot in the long freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke. Eme Miller won the girls backstroke, individual medley and short freestyle.
Caitlin Mark, Zane Shreve and Aaron Hudson all added a pair of victories. Ian James, Katy Smeltzer, Lucas Holcomb and Neal Fennig picked up one win apiece.
At Sunday's ceremony, Confer picked up the inaugural Rookie of the Year Award. Ostrowski was earned the Most Improved Swimmer Awards, and Cori Vormohr was honored with the Jacqui Baxter Sportsmanship and Team Leadership Award.
High point swimmers were: 8-and-younger - Alex Bader (girls) and Ian James (boys); 9-10-year-old - Anne Vormohr and Sok Vormohr; 11-12-year-old - Caitlin Mark and Zane Shreve; 13-14-year-old - Eme Miller and Lucas Holcomb; and 15-and-older - Cori Vormohr and Sam Miller.
