Records fell like rain, but the showers held off Saturday morning as the Jay County Summer Swim Team hosted the Wabash Valley Conference meet at the Portland Pool.
South Adams edged out Jay County to take its sixth conference title in a row, but many local swimmers posted the best times of their careers.
“You can’t be upset when kids are swimming their best,” said coach Bev Arnold.
Eight new Jay County team records were set, nine new Portland Pool records were established, and a total of seven conference records were broken.
Final tallies showed South Adams in first place with 2436 points, Jay County second with 2343, Wells Community third with 2031.5, North Adams Central fourth with 461, Union City fifth with 421, and Randolph County sixth with 344.5.
Among Jay County’s record-setters Saturday were:
• Cori Vormohr, whose 200 IM time of 2:38.26 and 50 breaststroke time of 36.44 were new team, pool, and conference records for 13-14 girls.
• Sam Miller, whose 200 IM time of 2:30.37 and 50 breaststroke time of 34.91 shattered Jason Arnold’s record for 13-14 boys that has stood for 19 years.
• Lindsey Vesperry, whose 50 free time of 32.34 lowered her own team record for the 15 and over girls. The event is a new one in the line-up this year.
• Joseph Vormohr, whose 50 free time of 29.51 set a new team record for 15 and over boys. He lowered his previous best by three tenths of a second.
• The 8 and under girls relay team in the 100 medley — Katy Smeltzer, Amelia Freeman, Anne Vormohr, and Sophie Bader — whose time of 1:33.33 lowered the record for the third time this season.
• The 8 and under girls relay team in the 100 free — Cori Stone, Rhianon Mills, Sophie Bader, and Anne Vormohr — whose time of 1:23.16 set a new team record and missed setting a conference record when South Adams out-touched them at the finish by 16 hundredths of a second.
South Adams swimmers set four pool and three conference records. Wells Community broke two pool and one conference record. And the North Adams Central team established one pool and one conference record.
