Relay qualifies for state meet (03/16/2009)

ANDERSON - Four members of the Jay County High School boys track team earned berths in the Hoosier State Relays with their efforts Saturday as hosts of the Patriot Invitational at Anderson University.
The top finishes for JCHS came in relays, including the 4x800-meter event. Kyle Simmons, Joe Rasmussen, Brady Mills and Tevan Nichols teamed for third place in 8-minutes, 36.72 seconds, a time that qualified them for the Hoosier State Relays.
Dexter Shreve also qualified for the state meet as he finished sixth with a high jump of 6 feet even. He had already earned a state berth in the long jump, in which he placed fourth Saturday at 19 feet, 11 inches.
Shreve was also part of the Jay County 4x200 relay team along with Brandon Reynard, Ben Vance and Garrett Krieg, which placed third in 1:38.81.
Lance Franklin tied Shreve for the best individual finish, turning in a fourth-place effort with his toss of 43 feet, ¾ inches in the shot put. Shreve, Simmons, Nichols and Rasmussen were fifth in the distance medley at 11:39.25, and Reynard, Simmons, Rasmussen and Mills took seventh in the 4x400 relay at 3:42.61.
Kenney takes 1st
HUNTINGTON - Casey Kenney picked up the top finish for the Patriot Wrestling Club this weekend at the Indiana State Wrestling Association Folkstyle State Finals hosted by Huntington North High School.
Kenney took the championship in the Junior 130-pound division with a perfect record. He finished 5-0 with a 10-7 victory in the finals over Tony Lovejoy, who placed fifth in the IHSAA Wrestling State Finals this year at 125 pounds.
Kyle Garringer was 3-1 in the Schoolboy 175-pound class to finish third place. In the Cadet 130-pound bracket Drake Meska took seventh with a 3-2 record.
