Rivals could meet in semis (01/31/08)

JCHS/SAHS wrestling

When it comes to tournament time, nothing is certain. But it certainly seems like there will be a huge semifinal match Saturday.

Jay County High School will host the IHSAA Regional 8 wrestling tournament Saturday, in which the Patriots' Casey Kenney and Muncie Southside's Jacob Armantrout could meet in the second round. The event begins at 8:30 a.m.

Kenney, one of seven JCHS wrestlers who will compete Saturday, is ranked third in the state at 103 pounds with his perfect 38-0 record. Armantrout, who was the sectional runner-up last week at Delta, is 23-3 on the year and ranked sixth.

The two met at the Olympic Athletic Conference tournament this year, with Kenney taking a 2-1 decision. They also wrestled consolation finals at the 2007 regional tournament, with Armantrout earning an 8-3 victory.

In order to set up the colossal semifinal battle, Kenney will need to get past Travis Bryant, 26-11, of Muncie Central in the first round. Armantrout opens against Gabe Sprunger, 27-9, of South Adams, which will have eight wrestlers in competition.

The 103-pound draw also includes ninth-ranked Steve Gonzales of Delta, who defeated Armantrout in the sectional championship last week, is 28-3 and would be the likely opponent for either Kenney or Armantrout in the finals.

Jay County's other sectional champion, Ben Theurer (135), will also open against a Muncie Central foe. He will put his 29-5 record up against James Coles, 15-11. The No. 1 seed at 135 is Bryant Whitaker, a Muncie Southside junior who is 25-1 and ranked ninth in the state.

South Adams' lone sectional champion, undefeated and sixth-ranked Josh Mann, will try for his 37th consecutive victory in the opening round against Derek Calhoun in the 130-pound bracket. On the opposite side of the draw, Caleb Culy, 31-7, of Jay County faces a tough test against Randolph Southern's Josh Martin, 28-2.

Of the remaining four Patriots who reached regional competition, three will face wrestlers from Winchester in the opening round.

Josh Lochtefeld, 25-5, will open against Jake Gibson, 25-11 at 125 pounds, Cameron Pfeifer, 19-7, will start against Steve Dossett, 29-6, at 140 and Zach Ainsworth, 15-21, will begin versus Anthony Fodrea, 28-6, at 189. Lochtefeld topped Gibson 7-4 when the teams met in dual-meet action in December with Winchester defeating JCHS 47-27.

Skylar Finnerty, who was the sectional runner-up at 145 pounds, will open his tournament against Southside's Casey Bigtree, 18-9. Finnerty is 21-16 this season.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class will advance to semi-state competition. Pfeifer was the Patriots' lone qualifier last season, advancing at 112 pounds. South Adams had two semi-state qualifiers last season, including current senior Colt Gentis. Neither team sent any competitors to the state finals in 2007.

The most common opponent in the first round for the Starfires is Yorktown. Gentis, 28-6, starts against Yorktown's Andrew Hiestand, 28-4, at 119 pounds, John Striker, 26-11, begins against Jordan Dulaney, 33-3, at 140 and Dustin Hunt, 11-12, kicks off versus Brentan Hiestand, 31-5 at 145.

Other quarterfinal matches for SAHS Saturday are: Josh Ehr, 25-8, vs. Wapahani's Clayton Harry, 23-3, at 112; Jackson Werst, 30-7 vs. Southside's Jimmy King, 28-4, at 215; and Jim West, 30-6, vs. Muncie Central's Adam Werling, 18-20 at heavyweight.

Favorites in each weight class are: 103 - No. 3 Kenney; 112 - Derek Bevans, 33-2, of Yorktown; 119 - Southern Wells' Darin Fiechter, 34-3; 125 - Tanner Armantrout, 21-5, of Southside; 130 - No. 6 Mann; 135 - Whitaker; 140 - Doug Linthicum of Bellmont, 32-4; 145 - Hiestand; 152 -Matt Becker, 29-2, of Norwell; 160 - Yorktown's Derek May, 28-8; 171 -No. 4 Ben Bultemeier, 29-1 of Bellmont; 189 - Fodrea; 215 - Hunter Harper, 30-1, of Norwell; HWT - Winchester's No. 3 Adam Chalfant, 34-0.[[In-content Ad]]
