Rockets 4-0 in USBC tourney (07/07/08)
Portland Rockets
FORT WAYNE - Jake Carr hit a two-run home run to tie the game. And then the Rockets' offense roared to life.
Portland overcame a three-run deficit Sunday, rallying for a 10-4, eight-inning victory over the Detroit Metro Tigers in the United States Baseball Congress Fourth of July tournament.
The Rockets trailed 3-0 to Detroit Metro after three innings, but rallied in the bottom of the sixth when Carr's blast tied the game. Carr came through again in the eighth inning, executing a squeeze bunt to bring home Aaron Pfeffenberger. Andy Hughes also came home on the play following an error.
Heath Williams, Steve Wiegle and Hughes also had RBIs in the eighth, and Mitch Waters tossed the final inning to earn his second victory of the weekend.
Waters was also the winning pitcher in a 4-0 victory Saturday over the Geneva Cardinals. He had 12 strikeouts in that game and was voted as the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Portland won its tournament opener Friday 4-0 over Shady Nook behind a two-hit shutout effort by Garrett Wiejak. He was backed by a pair of double plays.
Pfeffenberger, who finished the weekend with seven hits, drove in the first Rocket run, Chad Geier had an RBI double in the fourth inning and Waters delivered a two-run triple in the fifth.
Saturday's second game saw the Rockets crush the Fort Wayne Red Sox 9-0 with Cory Murray earning the victory.
The 4-0 weekend lifted Portland to 20-6 on the season, just one win short of matching its total from 2007.
