CELINA, Ohio — The Portland Rockets put up a strong effort Saturday and Sunday against the host Grand Lake Mariners, but walked away with a couple of 1-0 losses.
Portland (1-3) had the tying run on second base in the ninth inning Sunday before a strikeout ended the threat. It got hits from Brad Smith, Brad Kindred and Geoff Bowers.
Tyler Reynolds struck out three batters in two innings of relief, but gave up an unearned run in the seventh to suffer the loss.
On Saturday the Rockets managed just a couple of hits, one each by Nate Clem and Jay County High School graduate Heath Williams, while striking out 14 times. The Mariners scored the winning run in the 10th inning thanks to an error, a sacrifice bunt, a balk and an infield single.
Daniel Bollenbacher (South Adams) started and struck out five batters in four innings.
All three of the Rockets’ losses this year have come by a single run.

OATCC honors Brunswick
COLUMBUS, Ohio — In addition to her athletic efforts,
Fort Recovery High School senior Holly Brunswick was also honored for her work in the classroom.
The Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches Academic selected Brunswick, who finished seventh in the high jump Friday at the OHSAA Division III Girls Track and Field State Finals, as an Academic All-Ohio Athlete. To qualify for the award, an athlete must be a state qualifier and carry a grade point average of at least 3.5.
Brunswick was one of Fort Recovery’s valedictorians this year.

Morningstar leads
Kylie Morningstar powered Persimmon Ridge Saturday to a 12-11 victory over First Merchants Bank in Portland Junior League Rookie softball.
Loy Real Estate and Auction defeated Portland Optimist 14-5. On Friday First Merchants defeated Portland Optimist twice, 10-7 and 13-3.
Morningstar went 3-for-3 with three runs and three RBIs, two of which came during Persimmon Ridge’s six-run third inning. Mariah Gross added four hits, two runs and two RBIs.
Haley Gillette had four hits, three runs and three RBIs to lead Loy.
Kayla Hurt had two hits, two RBIs and a run in First Merchants’ first win Friday, and Jayden Claytor had three hits, two runs and two RBIs in game two.[[In-content Ad]]
