Rockets drop third straight (07/06/05)
Local roundup
FORT WAYNE — The Portland Rockets held on to their No. 1 ranking, but couldn’t hold off Fort Wayne Northrup.
Portland, which stayed No. 1 in this week’s Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Web site’s poll despite going 1-3 on the weekend, dropped 3-2 to Northrup in eight innings Tuesday. It marked the team’s third straight defeat as it is now 21-11 overall and 8-2 in the Fort Wayne Baseball Federation.
The Rockets jumped out to the early lead, scoring their only two runs in the first inning. Northrup forged a tie to force extra innings, then took the win on an RBI single by former Rocket Kyle Daugherty. Jay County graduate Mitch Waters took the loss in relief.
Nick Pfeffenbarger tossed the first seven innings for Portland. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out seven.
Matt Gard and Phil Bruns each finished with a pair of hits.

ANDERSON — After finally getting its second win of the year over Seymour, the Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team finished the Anderson Tournament the way it started.
Having lost the first three contests of the weekend by double-digits, Muncie handed Jay-Randolph the same fate in the finale 10-0 in five innings Sunday.
The Bulldogs (2-11) were held to one hit for the third time in the tournament, while Muncie scored at least a run in every inning.
Jay County’s Josh Shatto suffered the defeat, allowing seven runs — four earned — on four hits in four innings. He also had the only hit in support of his effort.[[In-content Ad]]
