Local roundup
CINCINNATI - The seven-time champions were the only team better than the Rockets.
The Portland Rockets finished as the runners-up at the American Amateur Baseball Congress East Central Regional tournament as the Canton Stallions won their seventh straight title. Portland's only losses came against Canton, 1-0 on Saturday and 4-1 on Sunday.
After falling 1-0 in the championship of the winner's bracket Saturday, the Rockets (30-14), bounced back with a 10-7 win over Yorkville (Cincinnati) to earn the first trip to championship Sunday in team history and a rematch with Canton. But, they fell behind 4-0 and could not mount a comeback.
The Stallions (45-11), who now advance to the AABC World Series in Huntsville, Texas, scored all four of their runs in the opening three innings against Jay County High School graduate Pete Byrum. Korey Heppeard, Ryan Schmidt and Mitch Waters (Jay County) held Canton scoreless the rest of the way, but the Rockets could not manage a run until the seventh.
Waters, Adam Childs and Chad Geier delivered consecutive hits in that final frame, but the rally ended with the tying run at the plate.
Saturday's loss to the Stallions came in a pitcher's duel as Matt Ousley (South Adams) took the mound for the Rockets. Each team managed to get just two runners in scoring position with only Canton pushing one across. Portland had runners on second and third in the fourth inning, but could not tie the game.
The Rockets took control of their game against Yorkville with three runs in the fifth inning and three in the seventh. Key hits were turned in by Childs, Derek Lehrman, Phil Bruns and Lenny Koesters.
