Rockets improve to 16-5 despite ending streak (06/28/04)

Local Roundup

The Portland Rockets’ winning streak came to an end Saturday as they split a double-header with Crumback-Symons.

Portland won the first contest — it’s eighth victory in a row — by a score of 9-8, but dropped the second 7-3. It added a couple of forfeit wins over the South Bend Senators Sunday.

The Rockets (16-5) trailed 6-4 and 8-7 in the first contest against Crumback at Shoaff Park in Fort Wayne, but rallied both times.

Brandon Dillon started the second rally with a one-out infield single in the seventh inning. Brad Buckingham brought him to the plate with a double, and advanced to third on Kurt Rammel’s ground out.

Brian Meyer followed with a ground ball to second which should have ended the inning, but it was misplayed and Buckingham came home with the winning run.

Jay County graduate Josh Jellison finished off Crumback with a one-two-three seventh inning, which included a pair of strikeouts.

Ryan Rammel paced the offense with a home run and four RBIs. Tommy Pearce also hit a home run.

Portland struggled in the second game with five errors and five walks which buried starting pitcher Pete Byrum.

The Jay County graduate gave up seven runs — three earned — on four hits in four innings. One of the hits was a grand slam.

Kris Steffen hit his first home run of the season for the Rockets.

JR still winless

The Jay-Randolph Bulldogs American Legion baseball team is still looking for its first victory after a pair of losses Saturday and one Friday. It dropped 11-0 and 7-4 decisions to Kokomo Saturday following an 11-1 loss to St. Henry Friday.

Jay County graduate Heath Williams accounted for one of JR’s three hits in the opener against Kokomo. The other two hits came from Cory Friend and Casey Green.

Jacob Sewell paced the offense in the second game against Kokomo as he went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. Tilmon Clark, Jason Martin and Trey Schwab each added one run and one hit.

Green and Cory Waldrath took the pitching defeats.

Williams accounted for the only Bulldog run against St. Henry as he led off the fifth inning with a solo home run. He finished 2-for-4, and Daniel Bogue also had two hits.

Kyle Hunt took the loss.
