Rockets ousted by Akron (08/08/2008)
Portland Rockets
CANTON, Ohio - The Portland Rockets picked up a regional win Thursday. But then their tournament trip came to a halt.
Portland defeated the Warren Cleats 8-2 in their first elimination game, but then fell 3-2 to the Akron Lasiks.
Corey Murray gave up single runs to the Lasiks in the third, fourth and fifth inning before Jay County High School graduate Heath Williams got the Rockets on the board in the sixth.
Williams worked for a two-out walk, then strole second and third bases. He scored Portland's first run on a wild pitch.
In the seventh inning Ryan Shell and Mitch Waters (JCHS) each had singles, and an error pushed them to second and third. Cory Walradth grounded out to plate Shell, but Waters was stranded on third base.
Murray took the loss for the Rockets, allowing the three runs in five innings. Ethan Tribolet tossed three innings of scoreless relief, and Daniel Bollenbacher (South Adams) pitched a scoreless ninth.
Ian Sanders had two of Portland's five hits.
Steve Wiegle led the Rockets (34-10 in the opening game with three hits. Williams and Cory Locke (JCHS) each added two hits, and Sanders notched a two-run double.
Eric Van Matre earned the win as he struck out eight batters in five innings. Former JCHS pitchers Josh Atkinson and Josh Shatto finished off the game with four innings of shutout relief.
The Rockets' 1-2 tournament record left them short of an AABC World Series berth, but one of their players will represent them in Texas. AABC rules allow the championship team - the host Canton Stallions - to draft players from their regional foes.
The Stallions selected Waters, who will make the trip to the World Series next week in Huntsville, Texas. Waters set a Portland team record for wins this year with 14.
