Rockets romp over Geneva (06/18/08)

The Rockets hammered the Geneva Cardinals 11-1 Tuesday before a hometown crowd of more than 100 at Runkle-Miller Field.

Three Rockets led the way with two hits each, Jay County's Andy Hughes and Mitch Waters and Missinewa's Ryan Shell. Four other Rockets contributed hits as the team racked up 10 for the night.

Pete Byrum of Jay County dominated for the Rockets from the mound for three innings. Facing nine batters, he struck out three and allowed no one on base. Woeste and Dalton followed Byrum for the Rockets, each pitching for two innings. Dalton gave up the only Cardinal run of the night.

Corey Murray of Richmond finished the game for the Rockets, striking out the side in the eighth inning.

The Rockets travel to Fort Wayne Thursday to face Crumback Simons at 7 p.m. at Carrington Field, but they'll be back in action at home on Friday, hosting the Ohio Warhawks at 6:30 p.m.

Junior League

Century 21 topped Lehman and Bixler 13-10 while Stohl and Stutzman clobbered Patriot Sportswear 16-0 in Super Major League girls' softball Tuesday night.

Kacey Williams homered and tripled to lead Century 21. Whitni Somers, Cortney Myers, Brittany Mamor, Jessica Carducci, and Catherine Braun all had singles.

Lyndsey Chandler and Logan Chandler singled for Lehman and Bixler.

Daphne Schwartz Alexis Ford singled for Stohl and Stutzman in the win over Patriot Sportswear.

In Major League softball action Tuesday, Sertech defeated Masonic Lodge 16-14 and Crossroads Credit Union edged Indoor Comfort 13-12.

Kaili Baughman doubled for Sertech, while Kyra Braun and Destiny Hare each had singles. Shannon Glattli had Masonic Lodge's only hit, a single.

Abby Vance led Crossroads Credit Union with a pair of singles. Maddi McCormick, Katlin Petro, Katie Aker, and Alysia Fennig each had singles for Crossroads.

Tasya Smith, Alex Loy, and Justine Wallischeck singled for Indoor Comfort.

In Minor League softball action on Paul Minnich Field, REMC defeated J&P 10-8.

REMC had nine hits for the night, with Larissa Boles leading the way with three singles. Courtney Rittenhouse doubled and Kelsey Devoe contributed a pair of singles, while McKayla Norris, Autumn Williams singled.

J&P was led by Abbey Wendel and Catherine Dunn, who each had a pair of singles. Sydney Robbins, Chelsea Mock, and Michaela Iles each singled.

In Rookie League action, it was Loy's Auction over JaMar TV and Appliances 9-7. Emily Corn, Ryan Williams, and Irene Braun doubled for Loy's. Williams also singled as did Skylar Keller, Arianna Taylor, and Nina McShane.

Katie Beougher doubled and hit two singles to lead JaMar. Maddie Braun and Taylor Muhlenkamp each had three singles. Mallory Wright, Gracie Runkle, McKenzie Huey, and Audrey Shreve each had two singles.

Swimmers win

Jay County swimmers won 11 of 20 relays and 33 of 60 individual events Tuesday, coming out on top 594-517 in a rare meet with Celina.

Triple event winners included Carley Stone in the 8 and under girls' long free, butterfly, and short free; Alex Bader in the 8 and under girls' backstroke, IM, and breaststroke; Sophie Bader in the 9-10 girls' long free, backstroke, and IM; Anne Vormohr in the 9-10 girls' butterfly, breaststroke, and short free; Sok Vormohr in the 9-10 boys' long free, bacstroke, and short free; and Cori Vormohr in the 15 and over girls' butterfly, IM, and breaststroke.

Jay County had five double event winners. Zane Shreve won the 11-12 boys' breaststroke and short free, Mary Hudson won the 13-14 girls' long free and breasstroke; Eme Miller won the 13-14 girls' butterfly and IM, Wiley Young won the 13-14 boys' long free and IM, and Lucas Holcomb won the 13-14 boys' butterfly and short free.

Single event winners included Ian James, 8 and under boys IM; Katy Smeltzer, 11-12 girls' backstroke; Evan Mathiass, 11-12 boys' backstroke; Adam Abbott, 13-14 boys backstroke; and Neal Fennig, 15 and over boys' backstroke.

The summer swim team's next meet is Thursday when the team travels to Bluffton to face the Wells Community Swim Team at 6 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
