Rockets split in NABF tourney (08/12/05)
Portland Rockets
FORT WAYNE — The Portland Rockets split their opening tournament pair — again.
As was the case at both the state and regional levels of the American Amateur Baseball Congress tournament the last two weeks, the Rockets won their first game and lost their second Thursday as they opened play in the National Amateur Baseball Federation tournament. Portland started with a convincing 9-2 victory over LaMargarita Blues, but let a 3-0 lead get away in the second game for a 4-3, eight-inning loss to the Detroit Metro Tigers.
Rocket veterans Matt Ousley and Adam Childs were the stars of the day as Portland won its opener despite trailing 2-0 after five innings.
Childs got the offense rolling in the sixth as he started a run of consecutive hits which was continued by Kyle Dygert, Brandon Cooley and Jay County graduate Mitch Waters. Phil Bruns added a big two-out, bases-loaded walk to give the Rockets a 3-2 lead.
Portland blew the game open in the seventh, which included a two-run single by Bruns.
Ousley, a South Adams graduate, was excellent on the mound as he pitched a complete-game, eight-hitter for the victory.
Jimmy Linder was scheduled to start game two, but when he didn’t arrive on time Ousley showed his toughness. Just 45 minutes after tossing 106 pitches, he took the mound again and retired nine of the 10 men he faced before giving way to Linder in the fourth inning.
Childs gave Linder a 3-0 lead as he ripped a two-run, inside-the-park home run and also contributed an RBI double. But the lead was not enough, and the Portland bats went cold after the third inning.
The Tigers had just one run on two hits through six innings, but scored the tying run on a two-out walk. They added the game-winning run on an RBI double.
Childs finished the day with five hits. Waters and Dygert each added three.[[In-content Ad]]
