Rockets split, stay in first (07/12/04)
Local Roundup
The Portland Rockets held on to first place in the Fort Wayne League, splitting a double-header with second-place Crumback Saturday. Portland lost the first contest 6-3, but won the second 10-3 to preserve a 11/2 game lead.
Sunday’s games against Wabash Cannonball were rained out. They will be made up at Runkle-Miller Field Thursday at 7 p.m.
Crumback and Portland were tied at 3-3 heading into the fifth inning of game one, but a three-run home run off Kurt Woeste broke the tie. Neither team scored again as Crumback (12-5 FWL) took the victory.
Woeste suffered the loss, and the Rockets managed just four hits behind him. Pete Milas had a pair of RBIs, and Adam Childs scored a run.
Jay County graduates Pete Byrum and Josh Jellison combined to get the job done on the mound in the second game.
Portland (22-9, 11-3 FWL) held just a 3-2 lead heading into the fifth inning, and this time it did the damage. The Rockets struck for eight runs in the fifth, paced by a three-run homer by Tommy Pierce.
Their next game will be at Fort Wayne’s Carrington Field Wednesday against Shady Nook at 7 p.m.
