Rockets stop undefeated SB (07/02/07)
Portland Rockets
The South Bend Senators entered Sunday's doubleheader undefeated. They were playing against a team that opened with 10 consecutive defeats. But that pattern has changed.
The Portland Rockets swept a doubleheader from previously unbeaten South Bend with wins of 13-1 and 3-1 behind hero Garrett Wiejak.
Portland has won seven of its last nine games to improve to 7-12. It's only two losses during the stretch were 3-0 and 7-5 Saturday to the Steel City Giants.
Wiejak earned victories in both games Sunday, tossing a four-hitter in the opener as he allowed just one run. The side-arm pitcher entered in relief of Chad Casey in game two to pick up his second win.
He also had the key hit of the second game as he led off the fifth inning with a triple. He scored on a single up the middle by Jay County High School graduate Heath Williams to put the Rockets in lead for good.
Ryan Schmidt powered the Portland offense in game one, following a leadoff single by Williams and a walk from Ryan Shell with a three-run home run. He went deep again in the fifth inning and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Shell added a 3-for-3 effort.
Mitch Waters (JCHS) took the game-one loss against Steel City Saturday as the Rocket offense struggled with just five hits. Portland failed to score despite loading the bases in the second inning and having runners in scoring position in the first, third, fourth and fifth.
Schmidt gave up six runs as he suffered the game-two defeat. Heath Williams and Joe Mack each had three hits for the Rockets, who lost despite out-hitting the Giants 13-12.[[In-content Ad]]
