Rockets streak now at 11 games (07/21/2008)

Local roundup

It seems the weather is the only thing that can stop the Rockets.

Portland ran its winning streak to 11 games Saturday, clobbering the Indy Thrashers 13-1 in three innings and 12-2 in five innings. It was scheduled to play the Northwest Patriots Sunday, but the team did not make the trip to Runkle-Miller Field because of concerns about the weather.

The Rockets (26-6) pounded out 20 hits in the shortened double-header, including two each from Jake Carr and Jay County High School graduates Heath Williams and Mitch Waters in game two. Williams also had an inside-the-park home run in the opener, in which Steve Wiegle and Corey Walradth each knocked a pair of hits.

Waters was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing just a single run before rain halted the game after three innings. Corey Walradth gave up just a single run in four innings in game two, and Josh Shatto (JCHS) closed out the win.

Champ 1st, Gray 2nd

FORT WAYNE and RICHMOND - Trisha Champ is 2-for-2. And Adam Gray has two second-place finishes.

Champ won for the second time in two starts on the Indiana Golf Association's Mountain Dew Tour, taking the top spot by winning on the second hole of a playoff Tuesday at Coyote Creek Golf Club. On the same day, Gray shot a 2-over-par round to finish as the runner-up at Highland Lake Golf Course.

In the 17-19-year-old girls division, Champ finished with two birdies for an 82 and tied for first place with Kylee Wierks of Fort Wayne. Both players parred the opening hole of the playoff, but Champ parred the 203-yard, par-3 seventh while Wierks bogied.

Gray had five bogies on the back nine in the 17-19-year-old boys competition at Highland Lake, but played the front nine 2-under-par to finish with a score of 74. He was one stroke behind Chad Melton of Economy for his second runner-up finish in four tries this year.
