Rockets stumble vs. SB, Plymouth (07/05/05)
Portland Rockets
SOUTH BEND — The top-ranked Portland Rockets didn’t get quite the fireworks they would have liked this weekend.
Ranked No. 1 by the Indiana Semi-Pro Baseball Web site, Portland split games with the No. 2 South Bend Senators Saturday before falling twice to the Plymouth Red Sox Sunday.
The Rockets (21-10) lost game one to the Senators 1-0 despite a one-hitter from starter Jimmy Linder. South Bend got its lone run after an error in the fourth inning, and Portland finished with just two hits.
The lone win of the weekend came by a 7-3 score as the offense awakened in game two behind South Adams graduate Matt Ousley. The Rockets had 12 hits to run out to a 7-0 lead as Ousley tossed six scoreless frames before the Senators got to him in the seventh.
Matt Gard, Lenny Koesters, Kyle Dygert, Phil Bruns and Luke Jones each had two hits.
Portland lost the opener to the Red Sox 3-1 as they faced former teammate John Pettibone. It stranded 10 runners to waste a solid effort on the hill by Linder and Jeff Trueblood.
The Rockets dropped the second game 7-6 to Plymouth despite a rally. They trailed 4-0, but went up 6-4 thanks to a two-out, two-run double by Jay County graduate Mitch Waters.
However, Plymouth took the win thanks two a pair of errors and four walks.[[In-content Ad]]
