Rockets sweep double-header from Warsaw (06/25/07)

Local roundup

The Portland Rockets might just have things turned around.

After an 0-10 start to the season, Portland has now won four consecutive games thanks to a double-header sweep Saturday of the Warsaw Indians. The Rockets won 3-1 and 6-0, and their double-header Sunday against South Bend was rained out.

Pitchers Chad Casey and Garrett Weejax carried the Rockets to their pair of victories, each pitching complete games.

Casey won the opener, giving up the only run of the day to Warsaw on just six hits.

Weejax, making his Portland debut, kept the Indians guessing with his submarine delivery as he gave up just two hits.

Joe Mack drove in all three Rocket runs in the first game with a fourth-inning triple. He and Todd Graves finished with two hits apiece.

Shannon McCormick had two hits in game two, in which Portland took advantage of walks to score all six of its runs in the sixth inning.

Valdez, Davis lead wins

DUNKIRK - Marco Valdez and Connor Davis recorded matching goal totals Saturday as they led their teams to victory in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.

Davis scored four times, including the game-winner in the fourth quarter, to lift the Cheetahs to a 5-4 win over the Jaguars.

Valdez also scored four times, and got help from Ian McCombs (three goals), as the Thunder topped the Lightning 8-5.

Daniel Fugiett was the top overall scorer on the day as he tallied all five goals in the Lightning defeat, and added four more as the team tied the Twisters 4-4. The Lions and Tigers also finished in a 2-2 tie.

Darian Beckham and Breanna Lehman each had two goals for the Twisters, and Zaaron Lee scored twice for the Tigers.[[In-content Ad]]
