Rockets sweep weekend set (06/20/05)

Portland Rockets

PORTLAND — They’re ranked No. 2. So why not take two wins a day?

The Portland Rockets, ranked second by the Indiana Semi-Pro baseball Web site, topped the Warsaw Indians 7-0 and 6-3 Saturday, and added two more victories 1-0 and 5-3 over Shady Nook Sunday.

The Rockets (16-5, 6-0 Fort Wayne Baseball Federation) rolled through the opening game of the weekend, getting a couple of hits and three RBIs from Matt Gard. Luke Jones also had a couple of hits.

Nick Pfeffenbarger grabbed the win, striking out five and allowing just two hits.

Jay County graduate Pete Byrum, who went 12 innings for the victory in his last start, pitched another complete game for the second win over Warsaw. He allowed just three hits in 97 pitches, and every Rocket in the starting lineup recorded a hit.

Game one against Shady Nook was a classic pitcher’s duel, with Jimmy Linder taking on former Rocket and former major leaguer Keith Shepherd. The game was tied going into the bottom of the seventh when Phil Bruns delivered the game-winning single to score Matt Gard.

Shepherd, who pitched for the Rockets last year and tossed for the Phillies, Red Sox, Rockies and Orioles from 1992 to ’96, allowed just six hits while striking out eight. While Linder had one K fewer in the contest, he only gave up three hits for the win.

Portland found itself down 3-0 in game two thanks to a three-run homer by Shepherd, but came back and got the win after Kyle Dygert hit a three-run bomb in the sixth inning.

Jeff Trueblood, Chad Casey and Erik Steffen combined for the victory.[[In-content Ad]]
