Rockets take two out of three (07/17/06)
Local roundup
The Portland Rockets won 2-out-of-3 on the weekend, but not without some excitement.
Portland gave up a two-run lead Saturday before taking a 3-2 victory over the Huntington Foresters in the opening round of the Midwest Prospects League tournament at Runkle-Miller Field. It needed late heroics to get a 3-1 win over the host South Bend Senators in the first game of a double-header Sunday before dropping game two 5-1.
The Rockets (20-8) led Huntington 2-0 most of the way before giving up two runs in the sixth. But, Todd Graves responded with a two-out, RBI single to bring Phil Bruns home with what would be the winning run.
Eric Van Matre struck out 13 to earn the win. Devin Lee had three hits, and Bruns and Jay County High School graduate Heath Williams each added a pair.
Portland will host the Geneva Cardinals in the next round of the tournament Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The Rockets trailed 1-0 in the opener against the Senators (22-4), but Korey Heppeard drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the seventh inning to forge a tie. After a scoreless eighth inning, a bunt by Adams Childs, a South Bend error and a sacrifice fly from Lee gave Portland the winning runs.
Mitch Waters (Jay County) got the win, and Jimmy Linder took the game-two defeat.
Jay-Randolph wins 3rd
WINCHESTER — The Jay-Randolph American Legion baseball team earned its third win of the season Saturday, topping Anderson 6-5 in the opening game of a double-header. J-R lost game two, 12-2.
Jay County High School graduate Josh Atkinson pitched Jay-Randolph to the win, allowing just one earned run in five innings. He pushed his record to 2-1 for the summer.
Luke Morrison led the offense with two hits, two runs and two RBIs, and Justin Schwieterman also drove in two runs. Of the Jay County players, Andy Hughes and Tony McCowan each scored a run, Atkinson had a hit and Cory Locke notched an RBI.
Jay-Randolph (3-17) fell behind 11-0 in the second game before scoring its two runs in the sixth inning. McCowan finished with a hit, a run and two RBIs.
Shreves places second
MUNCIE — Rick Shreves, Dunkirk, had another good showing at the Muncie Dragway Saturday. He finished second in the Super Sport division behind Bill Brubaker, Eaton, Ohio, reaching 107.28 miles per hour.[[In-content Ad]]
