Rockets third in tourney (08/09/04)

The Portland Rockets had an outstanding showing at the American Amateur Baseball Congress regional tournament in Warren, Ohio, winning their first two games before finishing in third place. South Bend, which went on to lose 4-2 to defending champion Canton, knocked Portland out of the tournament 7-2 in the finale in the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament.
Tommy Pearce had three hits in the final game as he was one of five Rockets to make the all-tournament team. He was joined by shortstop Ryan Rammel, catcher Brandon Cooley and pitchers Matt Ousley and Kyle Heyne.
Ousley earned his honor with a near no-hitter in the tournament’s opening game against Lone Wolf Freight. He did not allow a hit until their were two outs in the ninth, and finished the 3-0, nine-inning shutout with just 78 pitches.
Portland (34-14) knocked off Warren 10-5 in game two behind former major league pitcher Keith Shepherd. Kris Steffen had a hone run as the team advanced to the winner’s bracket final.
Eventual champion Canton handed the Rockets their first loss of the tournament by an 11-5 score, and South Bend knocked them out of the tournament in the next game.
IC rolls to title
Immaculate Conception was perfect in tournament play, winning all four of its games to take the Church League Softball tournament title. It topped Fellowship Baptist 12-11 in the championship game.
Immaculate Conception went through the winners bracket, topping Noble/Wesleyan, Christ Church and regular-season Division I champion Nazarene A 6-4 in the semifinals.
Fellowship Baptist got knocked out of a winner’s bracket in a 26-2 destruction but Nazarene A, but would later get a little payback. Fellowship topped Noble/Wesleyan 16-1, West Walnut 14-12 and then edged Nazarene A 14-13 before falling to IC in the finals.
Westchester United Methodist Church was given the Sportsmanship Award.
SAHS sales to begin
South Adams High School will begin selling season tickets for the 2004-05 athletic season Wednesday, Aug. 11.
Tickets will be available in the high school office from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. They may also be purchased through the Athletic Booster Club’s summer mailing.
Prices for season passes are as follows: All sports family pass - $150; Adult all sports pass - $50, Student all sports pass - $25, Starfire golden pass - free.

The East Jay cross country team will begin practicing Monday, Aug. 16.
Practices will be Monday through Friday from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Runners should meet outside the south end of the East Jay gym.
