Rockets top Geneva, improve to 15-5 (07/06/06)

The Portland Rockets handed Geneva another loss Wednesday, rolling over the Cardinals 7-1 thanks to timely hitting and some strong pitching by Greg Cauble of Elwood.
Cauble, 26, who pitched last year for the Mesa Miners in the Independent League, struck out 12 and gave up four hits. Mitch Waters came in to pitch in relief and wrap up the game.
Todd Graves homered and chalked up a total of three hits and three RBIs. Chad Geyer had three hits for the Rockets, while Phil Bruns and Waters each had two.
The Rockets now lead the league with an 11-1 record and a 15-5 record over all.
Tonight, the Rockets take on Indiana Wesleyan at Marion at 7:30 p.m.
Their next home game is Saturday at noon. The Cardinals are now 9-9, with four of those losses coming at the hands of the Rockets.
Swimmers victorious
Jay County’s summer swim team topped Randolph County Wednesday in a meet that saw two records set.
Anne Vormohr broke the 50-meter freestyle record set by Abby Arnold in 1992, and Cori Vormohr set her own 50-meter freestyle record.
Three-event winners included Eme Miller, Ali Miller, Cori Vormohr, and Caitlin Mark among the girls and Wiley Young, Aaron Hudson, Sam Miller, Levi Hummel, and Sok Vormohr among the boys.
Two-event winners included Michelle Landfair, Brittany Teagle, Anne Vormohr, Emma Laux, Sophie Bader, Lucas Holcomb, Neal Fennig, Joe Miller, and Adam Young.
Single-event winners included Mary Hudson, Michaela Long, Katie Simmons, Lynne Inman, Lauren Murrell, Katy Smeltzer, Amelia Freeman, and Rachel Vogler among the girls and Caleb Hummel, Richard Osterholt, Nathan Cain, Caven Schricker, and Zane Shreeve among the boys.
Major girls
Optimist will face Americare for the major girls’ softball tournament championship tonight in Portland after winning their opening tournament games Wednesday.
Americare edged Indoor Comfort 15-14, while Optimist squeaked past Crossroads Financial 5-4.
A 9-run 6th inning made the difference for Americare, which saw a double by Courtnee Smith and a pair of singles each by Krista Taylor, Cheyenne Petro, and Brittany Miller.
Selena McKibben had a double and a single to lead Optimist in its win.
Soccer action
Two high-scoring ties were racked up in West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League play over the weekend.
The Cheetahs and Tigers played to a 5-5 tie, while the Cheetahs and Jaguars played to a 6-6 tie. The summer league games are 3-on-3 with no goal keepers.
On Saturday, the Cheetahs take on the Jaguars, followed by the Jaguars vs. Tigers.[[In-content Ad]]
