With the Rockets seeking their 12th consecutive win, it only made sense to send Mitch Waters to the mound.

Waters, a Jay County High School graduate, ran his season record to 12-0 Tuesday night as he tossed a complete-game, five-hitter in Portland's 5-0 victory over Shady Nook.

The game went scoreless through the first three innings, but the Rockets got their first base runner as Heath Williams (JCHS) led off the bottom of the fourth. He hurried down the line on a ground ball to third base, reaching safely and advancing to second base as the throw sailed over the first baseman's head.

Portland's first hit came two batters later when Aaron Pfeffenberger blooped a single into right field allowing Williams to score the only run Waters would need. The starter used just 96 pitches and finished off the nine-inning shutout in just one hour and 51 minutes.

The Rockets gave Waters a cushion as four of their six hits came in a four-run eighth inning. Ryan Shell doubled to get the rally started, and Eathan Tripolet, Ian Sanders and Corey Waldrath all added hits in the frame.

Redkey perfect

The Redkey 8-and-younger all-star baseball team completed the Tri-County All-Star League season with a perfect 15-0 record.

Redkey won every game by the seven-run mercy rule. It also picked up championships in the Tri-County preseason tournament and the Redkey Fourth of July Firecracker Classic.

Team members are Skyler Hildebrandt, Cole Stigleman, Mitch Ferguson, Gabe Faulkner, Wyatt Geesaman, Konner Rodeffer, Garrett Rodgers, Max Moser, Holten Hill, Korbin Aucker and Noah Arbuckle.

Three Patriots chosen

A trio of Jay County High School players were selected to play in baseball and softball all-star games Saturday.

Amber Edmundson and Trisha Champ from the Patriot softball team were selected to play for the East squad. Thomas McCowan was chosen for the Class 3A/4A East baseball team, for which JCHS's Lea Selvey will be one of the coaches.

Edmundson was the No. 1 pitcher for the Patriots, who finished with a school-record 17 wins. Champ, a four-year starter at catcher, led the squad in almost every offensive category, including batting average (.419), hits (36), runs (36), home runs (five), triples (four) and stolen bases (18).

McCowan, the JCHS shortstop, was one of the offensive leaders for the team which set the state record for slugging percentage, finished third in state history with 65 home runs and went 25-3. He broke his own school record with a state-leading 20 doubles, and finished with a .512 average, seven home runs, 36 runs and 39 RBIs.

Minnich first

An area runner picked up a first-place finish at the Hershey Track & Field meet hosted in June by Muncie Southside.

Emilia Minnich, 10, Portland, cruised to victory in the 9-10-year-old girls 400-meter dash. She finished in 1-minute, 23.95 seconds, which was exactly six seconds faster than runner-up Abby Fisher of Waterloo.[[In-content Ad]]
