Roughia qualifies for national meet (05/05/07)
Collegiate Check-up
Jill Roughia qualified for national competition as she and former teammate Alyssa Johnson competed at the Mid-Central Conference Championships.
Roughia, a 2005 JCHS graduate, teamed for a runner-up relay finish as the Huntington University women's track team ran to a fourth-place finish at the April 28 meet. Johnson (2006) and three of her Taylor University teammates finished fifth in the same race.
The highlight for Roughia came in the 4x800 relay, where she teamed with Brittany Fillman, Jessah Brumbaugh and Lauren Davenport to finished second in 9-minutes, 33.8 seconds. The Forester team trailed only the team from Indiana Wesleyan, and their time was good enough to qualify them for the NAIA Outdoor National Track Meet, which will be held May 24-26 in California.
The sophomore also competed in a pair of individual events, taking sixth place in the 800 run at 2:27.37 and seventh in the 1,600 with a time of 5:00.12. The Foresters finished fourth in the nine-team field.
Johnson joined Alyssa Hartman, Becky Hegelein and Winchester graduate Tabitha Bogue for a time of 10:14.35 to take fifth in the 4x800 relay. She also joined Roughia in the 800 run, finishing in 11th place at 2:32.07 as the Trojans finished sixth overall.
Jay grads compete at HCAC
Joseph Vormohr led the way as a group of former Jay County athletes converged again at the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships.
Vormohr's fifth-place finish for the Hanover University men's track team was the best among the group of former Patriots at the April 28 meet. Also competing were 2004 JCHS graduate Nicole VanSkyock of Anderson University and twins Ian and Mitchell Thomas (2005) from Rose-Hulman.
The shot put, in which Vormohr was an IHSAA state qualifier in 2006, proved to be his best event. He turned in a toss of 44 feet, 83/4 inches to take fifth place as Hanover finished sixth in the eight-team field.
Vormohr, a freshman, was also eighth in the discus at 122 feet, 7 inches and ninth in the hammer throw with a distance of 119 feet, 7 inches.
VanSkyock competed in a pair of events for the champion Ravens, including a sixth-place effort at 5-minutes, 7.39 seconds in the 1,500-meter run. She added a ninth-place effort in the 800 run in 2:32.33.
The Thomas brothers each competed in the 10,000 meters for the Engineers, who finished as meet runners-up. Ian finished in 35:30.4 for 10th place, and Mitchel was 13th with a time of 36:20.7.
Tyler Sprunger
South Adams - 2004
Turned in a solid relief effort for the Bluffton University baseball team in an 11-0 loss Friday against Transylvania.
Sprunger entered the game in the fourth inning with his team already trailing 8-0, but shut down Transylvania from there. He allowed just a single hit as he threw four shutout innings with two walks and one strikeout.
He also pitched an inning of relief in a 9-1 loss April 28 against Lake Erie College and allowed one run on three hits.
Sarah Schmitz
Fort Recovery - 2003
