Collegiate Check-up
Although it's still January, the Huntington University track teams got their seasons started recently and a Jay County graduate helped lead the women to victory.
Jill Roughia earned a win in her 2007 track debut, helping the Foresters to score 87 points as they hosted Huntington's Frozen Forest Invitational. Marian College was second at the indoor meet with 69 points, and Manchester was last among the three teams with 56.
The win for Roughia, who graduated from JCHS in 2005, came in the 1,600-meter run. She cruised to victory in the event, winning by 15 seconds over teammate Vanessa Macias in 5-minutes, 48 seconds.
Roughia also came up with a third place finish in the 800-meter run at 2:36.51.
Tyler Niekamp
Fort Recovery - 2003
Helped the Findlay University men's basketball team continue the longest home winning streak in the country with wins over Wayne State and Saginaw Valley State.
Niekamp finished with five points for the Oilers (15-2), the sixth-ranked team in the NCAA's Division II, in the 68-52 victory Jan. 13 against Wayne State.
He also had three rebounds and an assist for Findlay, which has won 49 consecutive road games and is in the midst of a 14-game winning streak overall.
