Roughriders rally over Recovery

ST. MARYS — A double-digit lead slipped away Saturday as the Fort Recovery High School girls basketball team struggled in the second half in a 45-42 loss to the host Memorial Roughriders.
Fort Recovery racked up 18 second-quarter points and led 26-15 at the half. But it gave up 20 in the fourth quarter of its season-opening defeat.
Olivia Schwieterman led the Indians with 15 points — she hit three 3-pointers — three steals and two assists. More than half of her points came in the fourth quarter, including two of the long-distance shots, as she tried to help the Tribe hold off Memorial.
Holly Brunswick added 10 points, all of which came in the first half, and nine rebounds. The Roughriders hit 8-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter of the comeback win.
Lexi Schmitz scored 10 points to lead the FRHS junior varsity team to a 30-19 victory.

SAHS girls fall
BERNE — The South Adams High School girls basketball team suffered its fourth straight loss Friday, 45-15 to the visiting Bluffton Tigers.
The Starfires (1-4) trailed by 14 at the half and managed just one point in the third quarter.
Taylor Farlow paced SAHS with five points.
Katrina Hawkins and Alyssa Bluhm each chipped in four points.
Shayna LaVine led Bluffton with 11 points, and Kara Fiechter scored eight.

Thomas wins 5K
GENEVA — Ian Thomas of Pennville took the championship Saturday at the Rainbow Lake 5K.
Thomas, a 2005 graduate of Jay County High School who also ran cross country and track at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, posted a winning time of 15 minutes, 36.7 seconds. Thomas Crum of Fort Wayne was a distant second in 16:42, and Camille Herron of West Lafayette won the women’s division in 17:40.
Allison Beitler, a 2010 South Adams graduate who now runs at Goshen College, took the top spot in the 15-19-year-old female division in 21:45. Other division winners were Maddie Distelrath, Nathan Garver, Chansler Poole, Michelle Yoder, Jake Krider, Rory Helms, Sabrina Newland, Deb Tumbleson and Paul Shaffer.[[In-content Ad]]
