WINCHESTER - The only major difference between this season's game and last's were the location and the lack of a safety.
Jay County's football team scored 28 second-quarter points against the Winchester Golden Falcons for the second straight season, building a 35-0 halftime lead on the way to a 48-21 victory. The Patriots were up 37-0 at the half in 2005, and won 52-14.
Three of Winchester's four first-half turnovers resulted in Jay County touchdowns - two directly - and its third interception early in the third quarter set up another Patriot score. The visitors put 41 points on the board before the Golden Falcons managed their first touchdown against the JCHS junior varsity defense.
"We let a few mistakes get to us early on," said Winchester coach Ryan Vermilion. "The teams we've played before weren't able to capitalize and weren't quite as physical or have the speed that Jay County has. Jay took advantage of it. They had some big plays and took advantage of our turnovers and we did not react well."
Neither team looked particularly good on its opening drive, but the Patriots got a big pass play on their second possession and a fumble by Winchester started the unraveling process.
Justin Mann keyed Jay County's first touchdown, taking a pass on the right side which was nearly intercepted, breaking a pair of tackles and slicing back to the left sideline. He gained 76 yards before being tackled on the 2-yard line, and Corey Comer scored one play later.
The Golden Falcons (4-3) ran a couple of trick plays to put themselves in position to tie the game, but could not cash in. They fumbled on first-and-goal from the 3-yard line, and Jay County responded with a 13-play, 96-yard scoring drive finished off by a Michael Jobe 12-yard run.
The teams traded several turnovers, then, trailing 14-0, Winchester punter Jordan Patterson had a snap fly over his head. Instead of kicking the ball out of the end zone for a safety as Brody Tarter did in the same situation last season, Patterson tried to pick up the ball and instead the Patriots' Lance Franklin jumped on it in the end zone for a touchdown.
An eight-play scoring drive capped by a 1-yard Comer run on Jay County's next possession gave the Patriots a 28-0 lead with 2:36 left in the first half, and the senior wasn't finished yet.
"We've had stalled drives (this year), we've had opportunities where we should've scored some touchdowns and didn't, and I was glad to see us click on all cylinders," said JCHS coach Shane Hill, whose team had a balanced attack with 159 yards through the air and 158 on the ground. "Every facet of our offense seemed to be going.
"They were pretty confident with everything we were doing tonight."
The Golden Falcons tried a screen pass on the first play on their next possession, but Comer was ready. He picked off the pass and chugged 30 yards to push the score to 35-0.
Jay County got the ball again when Winchester fumbled the next kickoff, but did not use their timeouts to try to surpass last season's halftime total.
It was the fourth consecutive win for the Patriots after an 0-3 start. The 48 points were the most they have scored all season, and more than they scored in the opening four weeks combined. Since scoring just 41 points in the first four games against Delta, Blackford, Franklin County and Anderson Highland, they have put up 104 in the last three against Muncie Southside, Connersville and Winchester.
"I asked the kids in the end zone, 'Do you guys remember losing to Franklin County?' and they said, 'Coach, that's been like a month ago,'" Hill said of his post-game talk with his team. "It's great that we've gone on this streak.
"The headline on our scouting report this week said, 'Continue what we've started.' So we're not even thinking about the 0-3 start. We're thinking about the three straight wins - and now the four straight wins."
Aaron Bogenschutz highlighted the second half with his first career touchdown reception on a 5-yard pass from Wellman. That TD gave the Patriots their 41-0 advantage.
Winchester managed a pair of scores against Jay County's JV defense in the third quarter, but Hill sent his top offense back on and Jobe's 26-yard touchdown run 1:12 into the final period sealed the game.
Wellman completed seven passes for 159 yards, and Jobe ran 12 times for 88 yards. Sam Lyons came off the bench for 17 rushing yards as most of the Patriot reserves saw playing time.
"Any time you can get those kids in on a Friday night, you know they're going to play hard because they stand and watch and they're just dying for that opportunity to get in," said Hill. "When they got in you could see the fire in their eyes ... I'm very proud of all of our kids."
