Runners qualify for AAU Olympics

HAMMOND, Ind. - Runners from the Patriot Track Club and the Starfire Summer Track Series qualified for the AAU Junior Olympic Games in Des Moines, Iowa, Saturday based on their performances at the AAU District Championships Saturday at Hammond Morton High School.

Emi Minnich finished first in the 3000 meters for sub-bantam girls with a time of 13:35.22. She finished third in the 1500 meters with a time of 6:29.97 and fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 3:30.45.

Top four finishers qualified for the Des Moines event.

Jason Minnich finished second in the 1500 meters with a time of 7:03.99 and fourth in the 800 meters with a time of 3:41 among sub-bantam boys. He also finished 11th in the 400 meters.

Brad Leuthold of the Starfires finished first in the 400 meters with a time of 59.7 among 15-16 boys.

Dexter Shreve finished first in the 400 meters among 17-18 boys with a time of 54.3.

He also finished second in the 100 meters with a time of 11.9 seconds.

Summer wrestling

INDIANAPOLIS - Kyle Garringer finished 3-4 in Greco-Roman and 5-2 in freestyle Saturday while competing for Team Indiana in the National Schoolboy Duals in Indianapolis. He'll be a freshman at Jay County High School this fall.

Drake Meska, who will be a junior at JCHS this fall, finished 7-1 in exhibition matches at the Disney Duals in Florida with Team Yorktown.

Soccer action

Zarron Lee fired 10 goals in a win for his team during soccer action this weekend in the West Jay Community Center summer league.

Lee ripped seven of his scores in the first half as his Lions team beat the Cheetahs 13-5 in the Wildcat Division.

Lee is tied for second on the all-time goals leaderboard in three seasons at 51 goals.

In other sores in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League over the weekend, the Sharks topped the Whales 7-5, the Squidz beat the Sting Rays 5-0, the Cyclones defeated Thunder 6-4, the Twisters beat the Hurricanes 4-0, the Lightning topped the Blizzards 4-2, and the Jaguars defeated the Tigers 10-2.
