Runyon, Thornburg lead Jay over Devils (01/09/07)

RICHMOND - Nadlie Runyon and Lacey Thornburg split the first-place finishes Saturday in leading Jay County to a victory to open the 2007 portion of its schedule.

The Patriot gymnastics team's score was nearly identical to last season's as it defeated the host Richmond Red Devils 97-91.65. JCHS posted a 97.05 in 2006.

Thornburg, a senior, notched the top score of the day in any event with a 9.1 to win the vault. She also took first on the uneven bars with a 7.9, and added a third-place finish on the balance beam (7.825).

Runyon picked up victories on the floor exercise and balance beam with scores of 8.85 and 8.3 respectively. The freshman also won the all-around competition at 32.85 with Thornburg (32.275) in second.

Junior Erika Hunt turned in a couple of runner-up efforts, tying Runyon with an 8.4 on the vault and finishing behind Thornburg with a 7.85 on the bars.

Kristin Brown scored an 8.05 to finish second on the floor.

Lochtefeld, Smith win

MONROE - Jay County finished behind two sectional foes, but a pair of Patriots still came away with championships.

Senior Tom Smith and sophomore Josh Lochtefeld each went undefeated at Saturday's Adams Central Invitational to win titles in their respective weight classes. The JCHS wrestling team finished fifth in the eight-team field with 153.5 points.

The Patriots were behind sectional foes Adams Central (third - 164) and Norwell (fourth - 158.5). Bishop Dwenger won the title with 225 points, just one ahead of runner-up Anderson Highland.

Smith (189) and Lochtefeld (119) each posted 3-0 records to improve to 21-5 and 15-5 respectively.

Casey Kenney (103) suffered just his second loss of the year and went 2-1 to place second. He is 24-2 overall.

Sam Lyons (135) was also 2-1 for second place, and Caleb Culy (125) and Ben Theurer (130) each finished 3-1 for third place.

Leo tops SA in OT

BERNE - South Adams' boys basketball team rallied in the fourth quarter, but couldn't keep the momentum going in the extra session.

After putting up 22 fourth-quarter points to forge a tie, the Starfires gave up 13 in three minutes of overtime in a 94-81 loss Saturday to the Leo Lions.

Jason Sander led Leo, scoring seven of his game-high 33 points in the extra session.

Jordan Sharp and Andrew Caffee turned in big offensive performances of their own, but it was still not enough as the team slipped to 4-5. Sharp racked up 28 points, Caffee had 26, and Darin Toland scored all of his seven in the fourth-quarter comeback.

Aiding Sander for the Lions were Seth Gullett with 12 points, and Brennan Simpson and Jordan Bonerman each with 11.

Stone, Vormohr lead JC

YORKTOWN - Cori Stone and Anne Vormohr each earned four wins as the Jay County Winter Swim Team finished fourth at the Robbin Lindsey Memorial Swim Meet this weekend.

Stone finished first in the 8-and-younger girls 25-yard freestyle, 25 butterfly, 50 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. Vormohr won the 50 backstroke, 100 backstroke, 100 freestyle and 100 butterfly in the 9-10-year-old girls division.

Ashley Mark added three victories in the 8-and-younger girls 25 breaststroke, 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly, and Mary Hudson won the 11-12-year-old girls 50 backstroke and 50 breaststroke.

Others finishing in the top three were Alex Bader, Sophie Bader, Cady Farlow, Eme Miller and Sok Vormohr.[[In-content Ad]]
