South Adams roundup
BERNE - Nathan Rupp and Hannah Moore set the pace Tuesday as the South Adams High School cross country teams defeated Leo and Southern Wells.
Rupp took first place in the boys race in 17-minutes, 15 seconds as SAHS defeated Southern Wells 17-46 and Leo 18-43. Moore finished in 19:52 to win the girls race and lead the Starfires to a 22-35 victory over Leo. Southern Wells did not have enough runners for a full team.
Aaron Lehman and Sam Heckard made it a top-three sweep for South Adams (20-17) in times of 17:44 and 18:01 respectively.
Allison Beitler was third for the Starfire girls (28-9) in 20:14 followed by Taylor Miller (fourth - 20:48) and Sawyer Shane (fifth - 20:48).
Netters lose to HN
HUNTINGTON - The lone win for South Adams' boys tennis team came at No. 2 doubles as it lost 4-1 to the Huntington North Vikings.
Daniel Dynes and Jacob Smith missed a chance to finish off David Gedders and Chris Rayer in the second-set tiebreaker, but then came through in the third. The Starfire duo took the No. 2 doubles match 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 7-6 (7-3).
Huntington North controlled the remaining four matches, giving up two games or less in every set. At No. 1 doubles, the Starfires' Landyn Waugh and Kyle Schmidt lost 6-1, 6-1 to Alac Eckert and Josh Riggle.
In singles action Chase Ingle fell 6-1, 6-2 to David Ballard at No. 1, Kegan Sprunger lost 6-2, 6-2 to Jeff Ringenberg at No. 2 and Alex Humber lost 6-2, 6-1 to Adam Klaffke.
South Adams was also shut out in the junior varsity match, 8-0, losing all five tiebreakers.
Lions crush spikers
LEO - After picking up their first win of the year Thursday, the Starfire volleyball team struggled to keep up with Leo.
The host Lions defeated South Adams 25-8, 25-18, 25-3 Tuesday.
Jacie Yoder had seven digs in the loss.
SAHS also lost the junior varsity match, 25-8, 25-4.
JH boys win two
BERNE - South Adams' junior high boys cross country team topped Leo 16-45 and Southern Wells 18-43 Tuesday.
The girls team lost 19-39 to Leo and 35-23 to Southern Wells.
Evan Liechty won the boys race for the Starfires in 10-minutes, 37 seconds, Brody Shane was one second back as the runner-up and Joel Hawbaker took third in 11:11. Brett Affolder finished fifth at 11:44, and Andrew Steffen placed eighth in 11:58.
Kristen Muselman finished in 12:21 to take the runner-up spot. Loren Sparks was the only other Starfire in the top 10 as she finished ninth in 13:27 followed by Allison Amstutz (14th - 13:54), Brooke Kirchhofer (16th - 14:21) and Darian Eccles (18th - 14:34).[[In-content Ad]]
