SA girls earn first victory

UNION CITY — The Starfires dominated the first and fourth quarters as they picked up their first win of the season.
South Adams High School’s girls basketball team pulled away from the Union City Indians in the final eight minutes Saturday for a 36-26 victory.
Junior Dzejna Ahmetovic led the way as she scored 21 points for the Starfires, who outscored Union City (2-3) 12-2 in the final period. Alyssa Bluhm, also a junior, reached double figures for the second straight game with 12 points.
SAHS controlled the opening quarter on the way to an 11-2 lead, but fell behind as it gave up 18 points in the second. The game was tied at 24 after three periods.
The victory put an end to a 12-game losing streak for South Adams (1-3), which dropped its final nine games a year ago.
The Indians leaned heavily on Brittany Osborne, who racked up 18 points. Four other players added two points apiece.

Three go undefeated
NEW CASTLE — Jay County’s wrestling team finished 2-3 Saturday at the New Castle Invitational.
The Patriots defeated Randolph Southern 68-12 and the host Trojans 61-13. It fell 46-30 to Connersville, 60-18 to Jennings County and 40-34 to Lafayette Harrison.
Eric Hemmelgarn (HWT), Kyle Garringer (220) and Alex Abbott (113) all finished undefeated at the tournament with five wins apiece. Zach Metcalf (160), Jesse Finnerty (145) and Colton Compton (106) each went 3-2.

Jay swimmers win eight
CONVERSE — The Jay County Winter Swim team totaled eight victories as it competed Saturday at the Oak Hill Eagle Invitational.
All of the wins came in the 9-10- and 11-12-year-old girls divisions, with Ashlyn Down, Erica Hathaway, Cassidy Martin and Ashley LeFever each picking up one individually.
Dow was first in the 9-10-year-old girls 50-yard breaststroke while Hathaway earned her victory in the 50 freestyle. In the 11-12-year-old events, Martin took the 50 breaststroke and LeFever won the 50 butterfly.
Ava Bubp, Abilene Hough, Dow and Hathaway teamed for wins in the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, and Kaitlyn Dow and Alexis Bubp joined Martin and LeFever to take the same two events.

Hill, Miles take all-around
RICHMOND — Halle Hill and Courtney Miles, Jay County gymnasts competing for Marion’s Mid-America Gymnastics, each earned all-around titles at Saturday’s Flip Around the World Invitational.
Hill picked up individual event victories on vault with a 9.325 and balance beam with an 8.9765 as she scored 35.05 points to win the 7-to-11-year-old Level 7 all-around title. She was also second with a 9.0 on the floor exercise.
Miles totaled 34.375 points to as she won the 12-year-old Level 7 all-around crown. Her best score came with a 9.0 on the vault.
Hannah Outcalt won the 9-year-old Level 3 vault with a 9.125 and finished second in the all-around competition. Riley Leavell was second on the floor exercise with an 8.625.[[In-content Ad]]
