FORT WAYNE - The Starfires had waited long enough.

Having endured nearly two months since their last victory, the South Adams High School girls basketball team kept its losing streak from reaching double digits with a 40-38 victory Tuesday over the host Blackhawk Christian Braves.

The Starfires (4-12) had lost nine in a row, with their last victory coming Nov. 29 against Muncie Burris. Tuesday marked their first road win of the season.

Ashton Morgan and Anne Lehman led South Adams over the Braves, who have dropped five in a row and are just 1-15 on the season. The each scored 11 points, which Morgan hitting three 3-pointers and Lehman notching a pair of triples in the first half.

Andrea Moser added eight points, six of which came in the first quarter, and Jodie Muhlenkamp scored all of her six in the fourth.

Katrina Hawkins scored six points for the SAHS junior varsity team, which lost 24-18.

Jets top JC freshmen

Jay County's freshman boys basketball team went scoreless in the second quarter and lost 32-24 Tuesday night to the visiting Adams Central Flying Jets.

The game was tied at six after the opening period, but the Patriots fell behind as they were outscored 5-0 in the second quarter. They trailed by seven after the third end route to the defeat.

Drew Houck scored 11 points for the Patriots. Zach Cash added six.

FR teams split

DELPHOS and ANSONIA, Ohio - A pair of close road games produced a split result for Fort Recovery's eighth grade basketball teams Tuesday. The girls squad knocked off the St. John's Blue Jays 31-30 while the boys lost 33-28 to the Ansonia Tigers.

Fort Recovery's eighth grade girls trailed by five after the opening period, but pulled to within one at the half. They took a one-point lead after the third quarter and eked out the win to improve to 11-1.

Kelly Nietfeld led the Indians with 11 points. Kylie Kahlig had seven points, and Olivia Schwieterman and Kara Faller added five points apiece.

The Tribe boys slipped to 1-10 after leading 4-2 through the opening period. They fell behind by six at halftime and could not recover.

Jared Kahlig scored 13 points to lead Fort Recovery. Jacob Whitacre had six points.

Chiefs crush Blackford

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team had another big night Tuesday, clobbering Blackford 81-6.

The Chiefs racked up 10 pins, including quick matches from Austin Bentz (115) in 16 seconds and Brandon Poore (105) in 19 seconds. Conner Ray (80), Matt Taylor (175) and Eric Beougher (145) also needed less than a minute to end their matches.

Also contributing pins were Braden Smith-Lykins (85), Skyler Sibery (90), Preston Overholser (120), Nick Leonhard (125) and Nathan Frisch (160). Kyle Garringer (152) won by a 2-1 decision.

East Jay got pins from Robert Cooper, Ivan Cox, Heng Hong, Hai Hong, Allen Pettyjohn and Cody Bellis in its 39-0 junior varsity victory. Ethan Bruggeman won by a major decision.[[In-content Ad]]
