BERNE - The South Adams High School boys tennis team picked up its first win of the season Tuesday, defeating the visiting Elmhurst Trojans 4-1.

Daniel Dynes and Landyn Waugh led a doubles sweep for the Starfires (1-2), cruising to a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Chad Beck and Kyle Sullivan. Jacob Smith and Kyle Schmidt defeated Jackson Waren and Ryan Fox 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Chase Ingle defeated Adam Sullivan 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, and Kegan Sprunger rallied rallied after a rough first set to top Curtis Williams 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Reid Zurcher lost 6-2, 4-6, 6-1 to Joseph Voirol at No. 3 singles.

Alex Huber defeated Nick Best 8-3 in the junior varsity No. 1 singles match to lead South Adams to a 4-1 victory.

Jay duo takes fifth

INDIANAPOLIS - Darrin Martin and Jeremy Kunkler of the Jay County Special Olympics Golf Team combined for a fifth-place finish at the state tournament Aug. 16.

They were among 95 teams repesenting 30 Indiana counties.

Star spikers fall

MARION - It was another tough night for the South Adams High School volleyball team, which dropped to 0-8 Tuesday with a 25-8, 25-6, 25-16 loss to the host Eastbrook Panthers.

Whitney Ellinger led the Starfires with nine kills. Amber Neuenschwander finished with nine digs.
