SA shuts out Panthers

South Adams roundup

BERNE - The South Adams High School girls soccer team picked up its second win of the season Saturday 4-0 over the visiting Lakewood Park Christian Panthers.

After the Starfires grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first half, Chelsey Roop led them with a two-goal effort in the second.

Her first score came as she took a pass from Haley Busse and knocked her he shot off the post. She followed the miss and her second shot gave SAHS a 2-0 lead.

Roop also scored the final goal of the game off of an assist from Jessie Beavers.

Chelsey Nevil scored for the Starfires with 18 minutes left in the game, and the first-half goal came when Victoria Smith nailed a rebound shot after the Panthers' goalie rejected an attempt from Busse.

Katrina Hawkins, shifting from forward to goalie, recorded the shutout.

Runners finish 5th

LIGONIER - No Starfires finished in the top 10 Saturday as the girls cross country team placed fifth at the West Noble Invitational and the boys finished in 10th.

Hannah Moore had the top effort of the day, taking 12th place in the girls race. Sawyer Shane was next in 19th followed by Kristen Muselman (23rd), Jenna Smith (70th) and Adrianna Teeter (73rd).

Evan Liechty crossed the finish line 17th in the boys race, and Joel Hawbaker was 38th. Sam Heckard was 45th ahead of Andrew Steffen (78th) and Simon Sprunger (105th).

Brody Shane set a new South Adams middle school record, winning the 3K boys race in 10 minutes, 2 seconds. The team finished 14th.

The SAMS girls team finished 23rd led by Allison Amstutz in 70th.

Boys soccer falls

BERNE - The Lakewood Park Christian Panthers dominated the action Saturday, handing the Starfires a 9-1 defeat.

The Panthers scored six times in the first half and added two more tallies early in the second for an 8-0 lead.

South Adams finally got on the board when Blake Bauman hit Zach Sharp with a pass at the top of the 18-yard box. Sharp's first attempt was rejected, but he followed his shot and scored the Starfires' lone goal of the game on his second try.[[In-content Ad]]
