SA sweeps Rebels

LYNN — A mammoth inning put an exclamation point on a doubleheader sweep Saturday by the Starfires.
The South Adams High School baseball team scored 11 times in the fourth inning of game-two as it swept the host Randolph Southern Rebels 3-2 and 13-0 in five innings.
Taylor Smith earned his seventh win of the year in the opener. The Starfires built a 3-0 lead in the first two innings and held on for the victory.
Dustin Wanner picked up the victory in game two for SAHS, which improved to 17-9 on the year.
Gabe Sprunger hit a triple in the second game, and Corey Seffernick had a double. Wanner also had a double in the opener.
Waters Ks nine
SALA BAGANZA, Italy — Mitch Waters walked away without a decision Sunday despite not allowing an earned run in seven-plus innings.
The 2002 graduate of Jay County High School struck out nine batters in the Sala Baganza Baseball Club’s 4-2 loss to Farma Crocetta. He gave up just one hit and two walks.
Waters left with a 2-1 lead, but Farma Crocetta scored three unearned runs in the eighth inning for the final margin. Victor Santos, a former Major Leaguer who won 11 games for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004, earned the victory.
SA softball drops 2
BERNE — The Starfires fell 5-1 and 11-1 Saturday in a doubleheader against the visiting Northeastern Knights.
Lily Taing was the losing pitcher in both games, giving up three runs — one earned — in the first and 11 runs — five earned — in the second.
Jennifer Miller hit a solo homer in the opener. Lyndsey Chandler singled and scored a run in game two.
Alexis Ford had one hit in each game.
Byer powers win
Ashley Byer led First Merchants Bank to a 12-11 victory Friday over Loy Real Estate and Auction in Portland Junior League Rookie softball. Persimmon Ridge beat Portland Optimist 6-1.
Byer went 4-for-4 for First Merchants with two doubles, a triple, a run and six RBIs. Breanna Lothridge added three hits and three runs.
Britney Mullins set the pace for Persimmon Ridge by going 2-for-3 with a triple, a run and three RBIs.[[In-content Ad]]
