BERNE - The South Adams High School girls team stayed perfect Monday while the boys won their season opener.
Allison Beitler and Erika Waugh led the Starfire girls (3-0) to a 104-63 victory over the Adams Central Flying Jets. Caleb Wurster and Alex Habegger had two wins apiece as the boys team won 113-69.
Beitler took first place in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 14.12 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 1:01.83. Waugh's victories came with times of 5:30.79 in the 500 freestyle and 1:03.51 in the 100 backstroke.
The SAHS girls also won all three relays.
Wurster finished in 2:03.93 to win the 200 freestyle, and posted a time of 5:39.72 in his victory in the 500 freestyle. Habegger was first in the 200 individual medley in 2:25.13 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.45.
Jacob Werst added the only other win for the Starfires by taking the boys 100 butterfly in 1:07.34.
Chiefs sweep Driver
East Jay Middle School's seventh grade girls basketball team shut out Winchester Driver in the first, third and fourth quarters Monday in a 55-2 victory. The eighth grade Chiefs won 34-20.
Catherine Dune led the EJMS domination in the seventh grade game with 14 points. Chloe Steigerwalt had eight points, and Lucy Hemmelgarn scored seven.
Katlin Petro totaled 13 points for the Chief eighth graders, who outscored Driver in every quarter. Katie Aker joined her in double figures with 11 points.
Tighe leads WJMS
HARTFORD CITY - The West Jay eighth grade girls basketball team rolled to a 47-22 victory Monday over Hartford City. The seventh grade Eagles lost 56-14.
Chelsea Tighe paced WJMS in the eighth grade game with 17 points. Betsy Huffman scored nine, and Cierra Nichols added seven.
Emily Back totaled five points for the Eagles in the seventh grade game. Randi Auker had four points.
Jay blasts AC
Caitlin Mark and Katy Smeltzer led the Jay County Winter Swim Team to a 917.5-367.5 victory over visiting Adams Central.
In the 13-and-older girls division Mark took the girls long freestyle, breaststroke and short freestyle, and Smeltzer finished off the sweep by winning the butterfly, backstroke and individual medley. James Keen was first in the boys butterfly, individual medley and short freestyle.
Other triple winners were Eliza Bader and Tayler Smeltzer in the 8-and-younger division, Alex Bader and Noah Hummel in the 9-10-year-old division and Anne Vormohr and Drew LeFever in the 11-12-year-old division.
Grady Sprunger, Carley Stone, Cori Stone and Jesse Sutton added two victories apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
