SA tops Archers in double-header (04/18/05)

FORT WAYNE — The South Adams baseball team had won just one game in its first five. Saturday it doubled that total.

The Starfires swept a double-header against the Fort Wayne South Side Archers, 7-2 and 7-5. The wins pulled them to within a game of .500 at 3-4.

Lukas Baumgartner and Austin Givens had the big efforts for South Adams offensively.

Givens went 2-for-4 in game one with a double and a pair of runs. He nailed two doubles and added an RBI and a run in game two.

Baumgartner homered in the second game, finishing 2-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs. He had an RBI double in the first game and scored one run.

Rich Kaup had two RBIs in the opener, and Will Grandlienard and Justin Caffee added two hits apiece.

Mike Farris and Tony Van Gelder were the winning pitchers for the Starfires. Farris struck out 12 batters as he worked a complete game, allowing just one earned run in the opener.

Combine set

Hoosier Gridiron will hold a football combine Sunday, May 15 at Anderson University.

The event is for high school players who want to play at the collegiate level. Each participant’s results and other information will be compiled and provided to more than 200 college coaches.

Softball league

There will be a meeting for the 2005 Men’s Berne Summer Slow Pitch Softball League April 19.

The meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. at the American Legion hall in Berne. The entry fee for the league is $300 per team.

Clinic scheduled

The Jay County High School boys and girls swim teams will host a series of clinics during the first week of May.

The Monday, May 2 clinic will focus on the butterfly, followed by backstroke on Tuesday, breaststroke Wednesday, freestyle Thursday and starts and turns Friday. Each one will run in two sessions with those 9-and-younger from 6 to 7 p.m. and 10-and-older from 7 to 8 p.m.

The cost is $5 per individual day or $20 for the entire week. The entry fee may be collected on the first night of the clinic.

Coeaches clinic set

The West Jay Community Center will hold a combined baseball and softball clinic for coaches and parents Sunday, April 24.

The clinic, which will begin at 2 p.m., will be presented by the Jay County High School baseball and softball coaching staffs. It will be free of charge.[[In-content Ad]]
