SA wrestling runs to 18-0

NEW CASTLE — The South Adams High School wrestling team continued its march of dominance through the schedule, winning the New Castle Super Duals Saturday.
The Starfires earned the title by eking out a 39-37 victory over Fishers. They also defeated the host Trojans 40-28, Alexandria 40-27, Anderson 63-15 and Southwestern 63-9.
Charlie Hirschy (140), Josh Ehr (152) and Isaac Werst (171) all finished undefeated on the day as South Adams ran its perfect record to 18-0. All of Hirschy’s victories came by pin, including one in just 29 seconds. Ehr, the second-ranked 152-pounder in the state, added three pins as he extended his record to 16-0, and Werst pushed his mark to 15-1.
L.J. Moser (120) and Todd Batt (125) each finished 4-1, and Cody Conner (189/215) added a 3-1 record. Maverick Morningstar (215/HWT) went 3-2, and Gabe Springer (135) posted a 2-2 record.

Jay places third
MUNCIE — Drake Meska and Kyle Garringer each turned in undefeated days for the Jay County wrestling team Saturday as it finished third at the Delta Duals.
The Patriots defeated Fort Wayne North Side 64-24, Greensburg 53-27 and the host Eagles 57-21. They fell 56-21 to Adams Central and 48-33 to Greenwood.
Meska (145), who is ranked 10th in the state, improved to 18-1 with his five victories. Garringer (189), a sophomore, also won all of his five matches and is now 11-2.
Robert Cooper (103), Preston Keen (135), Nick Leonhard (152) and Eric Hemmelgarn (215) all added 4-1 records. Skyler Sibery (119) finished at 3-2, and Dyllan Derrickson (160) went 2-2.

SA drops 8th straight
LEO — The South Adams girls basketball team managed just four first-half points Friday in a 62-17 loss to the Leo Lions.
It was the eighth straight loss for the Starfires (1-8), who opened the season with a 23-11 win over Daleville. They trailed 41-4 at halftime, committing 20 turnovers in the first 16 minutes.
Katrina Hawkins totaled seven points and eight rebounds for South Adams, which played the entire game without Lindsey Graber because of injury and lost Taylor Farlow to an ankle sprain three minutes into the contest. Dzejna Ahmetovic added four points, and Allison Amstutz grabbed four rebounds.
The Starfires shot just 5-of-29 (17 percent) from the field.


Jay freshmen fall
MARION — Jay County’s freshman boys basketball team has been close, but has been unable to get over the hump. It lost in overtime for the second time this season Saturday, falling 24-19 to the Marion Giants.
The Patriots (0-5) trailed by three at the half, but pulled even in the third quarter and forced overtime. However, the Giants outscored JCHS 6-1 in the extra session to take the win.
Zane Shreve led the Patriots with six points. Zach Fullenkamp followed with five.
In its previous two games, Jay County fell 28-27 to Winchester and 33-32 in overtime to Bluffton.

HN tops High Rollers
HUNTINGTON — The Jay County High Rollers high school bowling team suffered a 20-0 loss Saturday to Huntington North.
Jacob Coy led Jay County with a high score of 204 in the opening game and went on to a 385 series. Drew Wood rolled a 193 in the second game to post a 356 total.

Reece dominates
Elizabeth Reece led all scorers Saturday during Boomer Basketball at Jay Community Center.
Reece racked up 42 points to lead Pizza Hut to a 60-22 victory over Greg Huey Construction in the first and second grade girls divisions.
Blake Bogenschutz had 26 points to lead the kindergarten-and-younger division, and Shelby Caldwell had 23 points in the third and fourth grade girls division. Other leading scorers were Mike Schlechty with 21 points, Clay Schmitz with 20, Taylor Homan with 13 and Jade Smith with 11.[[In-content Ad]]
