SAHS blasts Knights

BERNE — By the time the first inning was over, the Starfires were in cruise control.
South Adams High School’s baseball team scored 10 times in the first inning Saturday and rolled to an 11-0, five-inning victory over the visiting Southwood Knights.
Blake Fox finished 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run for the Starfires (8-7), who scored their only other run in the fourth inning. Corey Seffernick added two hits, two runs and an RBI, Skylar Schoch had three hits, a run and an RBI and Nick Busse drove in a pair of runs.
Fox also picked up the win as he limited Southwood to just one hit. He struck out one while allowing two walks in the shutout.

Girls tennis loses
BERNE — The Starfires dropped one match in three sets and another in a pair of tiebreakers as they fell 4-1 Saturday to the visiting Bellmont Squaws.
Erika Miller picked up the only win of the day for South Adams (2-5). She defeated Amberly Gutierrez 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.
Maddie Graber rallied in her second set only to fall 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 to Kylie Beery at No. 1 singles, and Shiana Scott and Brittany Potts dropped the No. 2 doubles match 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-3) to Miranda Voglewede and Miranda Baumgartner.
Maddy Kloepper fell 6-3, 6-3 to Angel Alanis at No. 2 singles, and Holly Taylor and Alyssa Armenta lost 6-2, 6-2 to Andrea Fruchte and Shelby Kiess at No. 1 doubles.
The SAHS junior varsity team lost 8-1 with the lone win coming from Megan Hreha at No. 3 singles.

Pats beat softball
MONROEVILLE — South Adams totaled more than twice as many hits as the host Heritage Patriots, but errors led to a 6-3 loss Saturday for the Starfires.
SAHS (4-4) had seven hits to the Patriots’ three, but it committed eight errors. Half of Heritage’s runs were unearned as it scored twice in the first, fourth and sixth innings.
Loren Sparks suffered the loss, giving up four runs — one earned — on one hit in four innings. Alyssa Bluhm allowed two runs in two innings.
Rachel Hirschy paced the Starfires’ offense with a double, two runs and an RBI. Sparks added a double and an RBI, Alexis Ford had a hit and an RBI and Bluhm contributed a hit and a run.

VonGunten leads
WABASH — Olivia VonGunten dominated the long-distance events to lead the South Adams Middle School eighth grade girls track team to victory Saturday at the Knight Invitational hosted by Southwood.
The SAMS eighth grade girls scored 124 points to edge the host Knights by three in the eight-team event. The Starfire eighth grade boys were sixth while both seventh grade teams finished last.
VonGunten earned victories in both the 1,600-meter run and 2,400 run to lead the eighth grade girls. Emma Rosswurm added a first-place finish in the high jump at 4 feet, 8 inches.
The only other win of the day for South Adams came from Wyatt Miller with a time of 8 minutes, 40.94 seconds, in the eighth grade boys 2,400 run.
Adding second-place finishes for the eighth grade girls were Addie Wanner, Caroline Kloepper and Rosswurm.[[In-content Ad]]
