BERNE - South Adams' softball team needed some extra frames, but was able to walk away with a 9-8 victory Wednesday over the visiting Blackford Bruins.
The Starfires had a 6-4 lead only to have Blackford pull even with two runs in the top of the sixth inning. Both squads went scoreless in the seventh and eighth before the Bruins pulled ahead with two runs in the top of the ninth. However, South Adams responded with three runs in the bottom to improve to 16-7.
FWSS tops girls tennis
FORT WAYNE - The South Adams girls tennis team went to three sets in three matches, but fell to a 5-0 defeat Wednesday at the hands of the Fort Wayne South Side Archers.
Stacey Thorpe battled LaTanya Ackerson in a tight first set at No. 1 singles, but she dropped a tiebreaker en route to a 7-6 (7-4), 5-7, 6-3 defeat. Kristen Steiner won the opening set at No. 3 singles against Katie Hall before losing 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 defeat. The No. 2 doubles match also went three sets with Tara Beitler and Taylor Miller falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to Sydney Weinert and Shaquala Ackerson.
At No. 1 doubles it was Katie Welch and Kristi Lehman losing 6-2, 6-3 to Adrain Fisher and Kelly Glymph. Amanda Sprunger dropped 6-1, 6-4 to Jamie Voigt at No. 2 singles.
