SAHS netters cruise

South Adams roundup

BERNE — Huntington North took one set Tuesday, but that was all it could muster against the Starfires.
South Adams High School’s boys tennis team was in control throughout Tuesday’s match, handing the visiting Vikings a 5-0 defeat.
Alex Huber and Scott Hoeppner wasted little time recording victories at No. 1 and 2 singles respectively for the Starfires (8-4). Huber finished off Aaron Gilmore 6-1, 6-0, and Hoeppner defeated Tommy Bolinger 6-1, 6-1.
Mark Muselman completed the singles sweep with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cameron Buzzard at No. 3, and the team of Ian Frank and Derek Schwartz topped Matt Sieburns and Wyatt Nave 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
J.D. Tarr and Jon Steffen dropped the second set at No. 2 doubles, but bounced back to defeat Jacob Klingman and Andre Smith 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

Runners win pair
BERNE — The host Starfire boys cross country team swept the top five Tuesday to defeat both the Leo Lions and Southern Wells Raiders 15-49. The South Adams girls topped Southern Wells 21-34 and edged Leo 27-30.
Evan Liechty set the pace for the SAHS boys team, winning by 11 seconds over teammate Brody Shane in 17 minutes, 18 seconds. Joel Hawbaker was third in 18:11, followed by Simon Sprunger with a time of 18:26 and Cody Sprunger in 18:46.
Hannah Moore matched Liechty by taking the top spot in the girls race in 21:13. Kristen Muselman followed in second place in 21:40.
Jenna Smith was fourth for the Starfires in 21:48 ahead of Aleesha Goodwin (11th – 23:07) and Allison Amstutz (15th – 24:06).

Lions defeat volleyball
BERNE — South Adams struggled to get anything going Tuesday in a 25-14, 25-11, 25-12 loss to the visiting Leo Lions.
Alyssa Bluhm finished with seven digs, five assists and three kills for the Starfires, who dropped to 6-12. Cady Farlow had six digs, three kills and two blocks, and Chelsea Bollenbacher totaled four kills.
In junior varsity action, Mackenzie Jennings finished with seven aces and seven digs as South Adams fell 24-25, 25-17, 15-12.
Jade Anthony had seven digs, three aces and two kills in the SAHS C team’s 25-24, 25-14 victory.

Seffernick takes 1st
BERNE — Kara Seffernick won the girls race Tuesday to lead the South Adams Middle School cross country team to victory over Leo (15-48) and Southern Wells (17-44). None of the schools fielded a full boys team.
Seffernick cruised to a 21-second victory in the girls race with a time of 21 minutes, 35 seconds to finish ahead of teammate and runner-up Hannah Coates. Olivia Von Gunten was third in 13:03 followed by Katelin Hawbaker (fifth – 13:52) and Lauren Klaehn (sixth – 13:59).
Jared Ford led the South Adams boys in fourth place in 12:33. Briar Goodwin was seventh in 13:53 ahead of Wyatt Miller (eighth – 14:16) and Paul Neuenschwander (ninth – 14:21).

Heritage tops gridders
BERNE — South Adams’ eighth grade football team scored twice in the final six minutes Tuesday, but their comeback attempt fell short in a 25-18 loss to the visiting Heritage Patriots. The seventh grade team fell 32-0.
Kody Coates scored on a pair of 3-yard runs for the Starfires, who fell to 1-2. Matt Hilton added a 48-yard TD reception on a pass from Justin Nussbaum, and Justin Mohler and Gabe Schwartz each made seven tackles.
Blade Zeitvogel led the offense for the seventh grade team (1-2) with 10 carries for 44 yards. Corbin Swygart finished with six tackles.[[In-content Ad]]
