SAHS netters defeat Bruins

HARTFORD CITY — A singles sweep led the Starfires to their sixth victory.
Senior singles players Alex Huber, Scott Hoeppner and Mark Muselman each won their matches, powering the South Adams High School boys tennis team to a 4-1 victory Tuesday over the host Blackford Bruins.
Huber set the tone for the Starfires, who are now 6-2, as he defeated Evan Baughey 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles.
Hoeppner topped Chase Twidell 6-3, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Mark Muselman defeated Mitchell Lanning 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 singles.
Jon Steffen and J.D. Tarr added a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bailey Landis and Trevor Smith in the No. 2 doubles match. Derek Schwartz and Ian Frank lost 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) to Aric Durm and Eric Harriett at No. 1 doubles.
Brayden Myers and Jared Rife gave SAHS wins in the only two junior varsity matches of the evening.

Raiders top golfers
GENEVA — One player changed the match Tuesday in South Adams’ 192-204 loss to the visiting Wayne Trace Raiders.
Ashley Saylor of Wayne Trace was 11 strokes better than anyone else at Golf Club of the Limberlost, earning medalist honors with a 37.
South Adams’ top score came from Abbie Fisher, who birdied the 236-yard, par-4 fourth hole and parred the 406-yard, par-5 eighth. She also had a bogey on No. 9 to finish at 49.
Kristen Lehman followed Fisher with a 50, and Sam Schwartz had two pars on the way to a 51.
Kristal All finished off the team score with a 53, and Kelli Lehman shot 56.
Arie Teeter shot 58 to lead the Starfire junior varsity team to a 253. The Raiders did not have enough golfers to post a team score.

Boys soccer blanked
GARRETT — A day after picking up their first victory, the Starfires struggled in a 6-0 loss to the Garrett Railroaders.
South Adams (1-4), which topped Muncie Southside Monday, gave up three goals in each half in the defeat.

Nathan Sliger assisted on the first two goals of the game for Garrett before recording the Railroaders’ third goal of the opening half on his own. He added another goal in the second half.
Dayton Sweet scored once in the first half and added a pair of second-half assists.

Parkway beats spikers
BERNE — South Adams hosted the only out-of-state opponent on its schedule, falling 25-9, 25-15, 25-11 Tuesday to the Parkway Panthers.
Alyssa Bluhm totaled seven kills, six assists and five digs in the loss to the squad from Rockford, Ohio. The defeat dropped the Starfires to 3-7.
SAHS also lost the junior varsity match, 25-8, 25-18. Mackenzie Jennings had five digs and two aces, and Holly Taylor totaled three digs and two kills.

Girls soccer loses
BERNE — The Starfires gave up seven first-half goals Monday in a 9-0 loss to the visiting Leo Lions.
Five different players scored for Leo in the first half, with Millie Adams and Katie Pannabecker each contributing a pair of goals. Hannah Field added a goal and an assist before the intermission.
Olivia Turner, a sophomore, recorded the lone shot for the Starfires (2-5). Brianna Nevil finished with six saves.

Blade leads gridders
BERNE — Blade Zeitvogel took care of all the scoring for the seventh grade football team Tuesday in a 16-12 victory over the visiting Southern Wells Raiders. The eighth grade Starfires lost 25-10.
Zeitvogel scored the game-winning touchdown on a 24-yard run with just 38 seconds left in the game. He also had a 35-yard TD run in the second quarter, and added two-point conversion runs after each score.
Zeitvogel racked up 130 yards on 11 carries, and James Groh paced the defense with eight tackles.
Drew LeFever led the eighth graders with 151 yards on the ground, including a 40-yard TD run. Matt Hilton had nine tackles, one of which resulted in a safety.[[In-content Ad]]
