SAHS netters fall to Bellmont (09/13/07)

DECATUR - Two Starfires went the distance, but still fell short.
The South Adams High School boys tennis team forced two matches to a third set only to lose a 5-0 decision Wednesday to the host Bellmont Braves.
No. 3 singles player Landon Waugh was in the best position for the Starfires, winning his opening set against Mike Sidam. However, he dropped the next two in a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 defeat.
Chase Ingle dropped a three-setter 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 6-0 to Dusty Teeple at No. 2 singles, and Brett Wagner lost 6-1, 6-2 against Ben Selking at No. 1 singles.
At No. 2 doubles Jacob Smith and Kyle Schmidt took a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) defeat against Austin Richie and Kobee McIntosh. Dan Dynes and Kegan Sprunger lost 6-1, 6-0 to Austin Bergdall and Derek Thieme at No. 1 doubles.
Reid Zurcher dropped the lone junior varsity match 6-1, 6-0 to Chais Porter.
Squaws defeat Jay Co.
DECATUR - A 2-0 halftime lead was not enough for the Jay County girls soccer team as the host Bellmont Squaws rallied Wednesday for a 3-2 victory over the Patriots.
Each team had just three shots on goal in the first half, but senior Tequila Guntle converted two for Jay County (3-4). She got the Patriots on the board just three minutes into the game, and scored again off a Dana Horn assist 22 minutes later.
But the final 25 minutes of the game belonged to the home team as Jessica Brewer finally got Bellmont on the board with 23:27 remaining. Brittany Thatcher tied the game two minutes later, and Kaylee Faurote turned in the game-winning tally with just 1:23 left on the clock.
Guntle finished with three shots for Jay County, which was out-shot 8-2 in the second half, and Brianne Wellman added two.
Goalie Abby Loy finished with eight saves.
JV golfers hit 215
The Jay County junior varsity girls golf team scored a 215 Tuesday in its final match of the season. Southern Wells and Blackford did not post team scores.
Abby Denney paced the Patriots with a 51, which included a par on No. 5 at Portland Golf Club and a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole. Alex Bunch had three bogies in her round of 54, and Anneliese Jetmore and Brittany Schlater each shot 55.
Macey Gerber finished with a 56, and Amy Nichols shot 57.
JV football tops Falcons
Jay County's junior varsity football team rolled over the Winchester Golden Falcons by a score of 38-12 Monday night.
Ben Vance and Jarod Conatser each had offensive touchdowns for the Patriots. JCHS also scored when Alex Morton recovered a blocked punt by Dillon Easton in the end zone.
Chiefs win big
UNION CITY - Matt Taylor and Kaleb Clark paced the East Jay Middle School football teams in blowout wins Tuesday over Union City.
Taylor scored on runs of 17 and 25 yards in the eighth grade team's 40-0 victory. Clark had scoring runs of 5 and 30 yards as the seventh graders won 36-7.
Julian Myers had a 48-yard touchdown run for the eighth graders (1-1), Kamron Bentz scored on a 27-yard run and Spencer Hodge returned a fumble 45 yards for a TD.
Cody Bellis got the seventh grade team, now 2-0, off to a fast start with a 67-yard TD run on the Chiefs' first play from scrimmage. Cade Price added a 30-yard TD run, and Dan Walter scored on a 4-yard run.[[In-content Ad]]
