SAHS splits weekend pair (11/21/05)

The South Adams girls basketball team moved to 1-2, splitting its pair of weekend games.

The Starfires lost 38-31 to the host Eastbrook Panthers Friday, but returned home Saturday for a 52-41 victory over the Union City Indians.

Julie Muhlenkamp paced South Adams with 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals in its first victory of the season.

The Starfires trailed 10-6 after the opening period, but outscored Union City 18-9 in the second quarter for a five-point lead. The advantage remained at five points at the end of the third quarter, and South Adams pulled away in the fourth for the 11-point win.

Joining Muhlenkamp in double figures was Jessie Liechty with 15 points. She also had three assists.

Brooke Fox grabbed six rebounds, Erin McCollum had three assists and three steals and Kayla Coblentz finished with four steals.

Lindsey Mackey had 10 points to lead Union City. Kaywin Lawrence and Allie Doppler each added nine points.

In the loss to Eastbrook, South Adams managed just 17 points over the first three quarters to trail by 14. It outscored the Panthers 14-7 in the fourth quarter for the final margin.

McCollum topped the scoring list with 12 points, and Muhlenkamp added eight. Kayla Coblentz (seven points) and Bethany Balsiger (four points) were the only other Starfires to score in the defeat.

Muhlenkamp had seven rebounds, three blocks shots and two steals. Balsiger added five rebounds and two steals.

Eastbrook was powered by Kelsey Green, who finished with 10 points. Ashley Brooks added nine, and Megan Rogers had eight.

Junior varsity

South Adams also split its junior varsity games, defeating Union City 34-29 while losing 31-23 to Eastbrook.

Anne Lehman led the victory over the Indians with 10 points. Jodie Muhlenkamp had eight points, and Jordan Lehman added seven.

Amanda Seats was the top Union City scorer with 10 points.
