SAHS splits with Squaws

DECATUR — The Starfires couldn’t quite keep up with Bellmont in the opener. But they dominated the Squaws the second time around.
South Adams High School’s softball team blew out host Bellmont 14-2 in five innings in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday after dropping the opener 8-4.
Alyssa Bluhm went 2-for-2 with a home run, a double, four RBIs and two runs in the blowout for the Starfires, who scored five times in the second inning and seven in the fifth. Alexis Ford had two singles, a double, four RBIs and a run.
Loren Sparks earned the win as she gave up just one earned run on two hits in five innings.
Bluhm suffered the loss in the opener, allowing eight runs — seven earned — on 15 hits in 5 2/3 innings. Alaina Johnston went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Baseball is runner-up
BERNE — The Starfires cruised in the opening game, but couldn’t put much offense together as it dropped the championship game of the South Adams Invitational 9-1 to the Blackhawk Christian Braves. SAHS defeated the Central Noble Cougars 15-3 in five innings in the opener.

Nick Busse led South Adams (18-2) to the win in the opener with three hits, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run. Collin Affolder had a single, three RBIs and a run, and Blake Fox added two hits, two runs and an RBI.
Chandler Ingle picked up the win as he struck out five batters in four innings.
Blackhawk Christian took the lead in the championship game with seven runs in the first three innings. Alex Augsberger gave up three runs — two earned — on five hits and four walks in 1 2/3 innings to suffer the loss.
Mills leads drivers
MONTPELIER — Steve Mills led a group of five Portland drivers who competed Saturday in the Thunder Cars competition at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
Mills finished in eighth place as Portland drivers made up nearly a quarter of the field. Travis Nichols placed ninth followed by Brian Baldauf (12th), Richard Dressel (13th) and Sean Torre (17th).
Brock Farmer of Portland placed third in the FWD Compacts race. Jeff Baldauf, Portland, was ninth in the Super Streets event, and Curtis Heiser of Fort Recovery placed 11th.[[In-content Ad]]
